SoFi Lets Students Borrow Money For School From Alumni | mashable.com

If you’re looking for cash for school, then you may not have to look any further than your fellow alumni. Meet SoFi, a social lending service that lets alumni of a school help finance the education of future graduates and earn a bit of a return on their investment as well. The way the program works is simple. Alumni invest money in their particular school’s funding, and then students apply just as they might to any other college loan. Loans are given to students for a 6.24% interest rate (5.99% if they sign up for auto-pay), alumni earn 5% back on money they’ve invested, and SoFi keeps roughly 1%. Alumni can invest with cash, or can invest funds through their IRA.

Just 40pc of the group’s 2,300 jobs in the UK are held by British nationals, according to the company’s people director, Mike Williams. The rest are largely given to Eastern Europeans from Latvia, Slovakia and Poland, he says. The admission is set to inflame tension over immigration , which this week intensified when official figures showed employers circumnavigating the annual immigration cap by transferring thousands of non-EU workers from their overseas offices to Britain.

Recent research suggests that a high number of graduates in the UK are unhappy with the amount of responsibility given to them in their first job. A poll by UKSP, a careers website specialising in hotel recruitment, revealed that 36% of those who have graduated in the last five years were “disappointed” with the low levels of responsibility that they were given in their first job. This has led to widespread dissatisfaction, with 45% of recent graduates believing that “they could have progressed quicker in their chosen career if given the right opportunities.” Additionally, 45% said that they were now wondering if they were “in the right job,” as a result of this lack of responsibility. One in five, meanwhile, feel they haven’t been given the “right opportunities” to take on responsibility in their job.

The other day I received a totally undeserved standing ovation as I spoke to students at Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration. I think the students just wanted to stretch their legs after 45 minutes of listening to my stories. I was really surprised and stunned by the applause. But as I later thought about it, the clapping wasn’t for me but the incredible growth of our hospitality industry.

For the first time, courses have been redesigned to incorporate the school's brand-new Hotel ICON into students' learning experience. General Manager Richard Hatter explained that they didn't want to throw the usual lavish hotel grand opening party. Instead, in keeping with the mission of the hotel as an integral part of hospitality teaching and research, the ICON is celebrating with a Hospitality Design Conference on the 21st of this month.

The budget hotel chain yesterday commenced the programme with 33 apprentices. The scheme titled JuMP (Junior Management Programme) is a fast track route into management and provides A-level students (18+) with a real alternative to going to university. On this programme school leavers can continue their education, obtain work experience, receive a salary and become a manager by the age of 21. JuMP has been developed to support Travelodge's aggressive growth strategy. In addition, to supporting the Government's appeal for British companies to generate more high value apprenticeship placements.

If India’s domestic hotel industry adds the expected 10,000 plus room capacity in the next two to three years, it may face a severe shortage of skilled manpower. As compared with a potential demand of 60,000-70,000 skilled individuals in the next two to three years, only 15,000 hotel management graduates are expected to be available, said Manish Khanna, managing director and chief executive officer of UEI Global, a unit of Berggruen Holdings, USA.
