The construction of Hilton's second hotel under its Canopy by Hilton brand is currently under construction in the City of London. Canopy by Hilton City of London will follow on from the success of the brand's inaugural venture in the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik, which opened last year. The new London hotel, located in Aldgate near the heart of the financial district, close to the historic medieval walls of the city and a short walk from the trendy East End, will boast 150 new guest rooms and suites as part of the mixed use development being built at 16 Minories.
The Minories complex will be built over 500,000sqft of land and will comprise office and retail space, as well as the new Hilton hotel. A new city square and green garden will provide public amenities to residents and visitors, and will no doubt be of benefit to the guests of the new hotel. The 4-star project is set to open at the beginning of 2018, along with other parts of the Minories development.
Canopy by Hilton is a revolutionary new lifestyle brand for the hotel goliath. Gary Steffen, global head of Canopy by Hilton says, "Canopy offers travellers a fresh experience in the lifestyle category with surprising extras and local know how. Aldgate was chosen for its proximity to both the stylish City of London and the more edgy and energetic East End", in keeping with the idea of the new hotel model Canopy is based on. The design of the project will incorporate a metal facade and will reflect the historic Whitechapel Gallery and diverse ethnicities that the area benefits from. A key feature of the hotel will be Canopy Central, an open plan ground floor space that is intended to integrate the hotel with the city by incorporating local elements of the neighbourhood in terms of food and design.
