How much meaning and value do fitness components have within the hotel and resort paradigm?
Hotels need to revisit how they look at the horizontal and vertical integration options for fitness (and vitality) oriented services, spaces and provisions.
As far as the horizontal integration goes hotels need to revisit how they work together with ecosystem partners such as gyms, clinics, coaches, tech platforms.
To remain relevant and to improve competitiveness hotels and resorts should explore a closer cooperation between hotels and gyms, fitness centres, wellness clubs, etc. They need to understand that is not a tactical partnership only. It should apply a strategic and structural response to what kind of lifestyle their guests aim to lead. The engagement options need to be scalable as well as feasible. CAPEX/OPEX issues, special overdesign and financial underperformance, potential licencing, health and safety regulations, and staffing during the time of staff shortages all make hotels hesitance about fitness provisions.
As per vertical integration hotels need to map and understand guest’ routines including training habits, sleep routines as well as nutritional requirements. Hotels may need to look at health, fitness, wellness and longevity, etc. as a flow and not as a product or service. Hotels should be aiming for an enabler role, i.e. facilitate their guests’ routines (hence the idea of working with fitness wellpreneurs).
Is fitness over or is it part of wellness, or lately longevity? How can fitness programs be improved, and what can hotel and resort operators do and consider repositioning average traditional fitness aspects? How deep hotels should go to vertical and/or horizontal integration?
