New itb.com platform launches today: Networking, industry news and the ITB Virtual Convention

Despite its cancellation this year, ITB is offering digital services 365 days a year by launching itb.com (www.bit.ly/2IkpHrB). The World's Leading Travel Trade Show is establishing a completely new networking platform for the world's travel industry. This global website spans a bridge between real-life meetings and digital networking, and features innovative tools for business, networking and exclusive content. "In these very difficult times the tourism industry needs ITB more than ever", said Dr. Martin Buck, Senior Vice President, Travel+Logistics, Messe Berlin GmbH. That is why, at the forward-looking events of the ITB Virtual Convention, leading speakers from ITB will be discussing how the world's travel industry can harness intelligent strategies to make sure it remains future-proof even in a challenging environment. In the wake of the latest developments, discussions on how the industry can deal with the coronavirus will play a key role. Between 5 and 11 March 2020 viewers can follow more than 20 exclusive live streams and videos in English and German, some in real time, some time-shifted, on itb.com. Peter Mikkelsen has been appointed as Area General Manager at Steigenberger Hotels & Resorts

Peter B. Mikkelsen has been appointed Area General Manager Berlin for Steigenberger Hotels & Resorts as of 1 March. This move means that Mr. Mikkelsen, who has just finished a successful stint as Managing Director of the Steigenberger Hotel Cologne, will be responsible in future for the Steigenberger Hotel Am Kanzleramt, the Steigenberger Hotel Berlin at Los Angeles Platz and the Steigenberger Airport Hotel in Berlin. He will also head up the Steigenberger Hotel Am Kanzleramt in the capacity of General Manager. Peter B. Mikkelsen began his career at the Steigenberger Graf Zeppelin in Stuttgart, where he trained in the occupation of hotel specialist. He then went on to complete a degree in Hotel Administration before gathering experience at business hotels operated by Sheraton, Hilton and Rezidor and securing the position of General Manager at the Radisson Blu in Warsaw. Mr. Mikkelsen has been General Manager of the Steigenberger Hotel Cologne since 2016.

ITB Berlin 2020 Canceled

ITB Berlin 2020 will not take place. Due to the rapid spread of the new coronavirus (COVID-19) the Federal Ministry of Health and the Federal Ministry of Economics have stated their opinion that ITB Berlin be cancelled. This evening at 1827 hrs, the responsible health authority of the district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf in Berlin imposed significantly tighter restrictions on holding the event. Among its requirements the authority stipulated that each participant would need to prove to Messe Berlin that they were not from a designated risk area or had not been in contact with a person or persons from a risk area. It is not possible for Messe Berlin to satisfy these requirements overall.

STR: Berlin hotels post record-breaking year

Berlin's hotel industry reached its highest levels in occupancy and revenue per available room (RevPAR) despite the uncertainty around an economic recession, according to 2019 data from STR.Thanks to healthy demand growth and a lack of significant supply increases, occupancy rose 1.5% to 79.2%, driving RevPAR growth of 1.4% to EUR78.87. Average daily rate (ADR), on the other hand, fell slightly (-0.1% to EUR99.53). "Berlin has become, after London and Paris, one of the most popular leisure destinations in Europe," said Christian Strieder, STR's country manager DACH. "At the same time, the German capital has also grown in popularity for MICE (meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions) business."According to STR analysts, a number of events were key in the German capitals' performance. January showed the market's highest year-over-year increase in occupancy (+11.1%), thanks in part to Berlin Fashion Week (15-18 January 2019) and International Green Week Berlin (18-27 January 2019). May was the top growth month in ADR (+8.0%) and RevPAR (+15.2%), due in part to the Airlift Festival on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Berlin Airlift (12 May 2019). In February, Berlin recorded increases in occupancy (+3.4%) and RevPAR (+6.6%). STR analysts tied the performance to the 69th annual Berlin International Film Festival (7-17 February 2019). On 9 November, Germany celebrated the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. During the celebration weekend (8-10 November), the market reported two nights with double-digit RevPAR gains.

Stefan Athmann has been appointed as General Manager at Hotel Bristol Berlin

With Stefan Athmann, no stranger is taking over the management of the hotel in the heart of the city, but a first-class hotelier with over 20 years of experience, who is strongly rooted in the Berlin market. He started his career as an apprentice at Atlantic Kempinski Hamburg and then moved to Kempinski Bristol Berlin. His further stations led him to InterContinental and Radisson in Berlin, to Uzbekistan, Greece and Belfast, before he returned to the capital as General Manager of the Regent Hotel Berlin in 2009. In 2015 he was appointed General Manager and Area General Manager Europe of Regent Hotels & Resorts and was also responsible for the new opening of Regent Porto Montenegro. Since September 2019, Athmann has been managing the glamorous Schlosshotel Berlin by Patrick Hellmann, which is under the same ownership as the Hotel Bristol Berlin, and which Stefan Athmann will continue to manage as General Manager in the future.
