Hong Kong Poly Research shows that Hong Kong natives have complex emotional responses to visitors from the mainland

How do tourists in your town make you feel? A study co-authored by Dr Shiqin Zhang, Dr Nan Chen and Professor Cathy H. C. Hsu of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University shows that Hong Kong natives have complex emotional responses to visitors from the mainland. The paper may help improve host–visitor relations in Hong Kong and abroad as tourist numbers pick up in the post-pandemic era. The study setting is particularly relevant as mainland Chinese tourists become more adventurous travellers.

Are Residents The New Tourism Ambassadors?

Local people may be the best ambassadors for tourism in their home towns and cities, according to Ph.D. graduates Dr Philipp Wassler and Dr Liang Wang, and Dr Kam Hung of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Building a brand for a destination is an effective way of attracting tourists, but destination marketers rarely consider the needs of residents - the biggest and potentially most influential group of stakeholders in any destination. The researchers note that local communities can make or break a destination brand, and their marketing may be far more cost-effective, authentic and persuasive than traditional advertising. Surveying residents from Hong Kong, famously branded as "Asia's World City", this pioneering study offers important empirical insights into how residents' voices can help tourism destinations to differentiate themselves in an increasingly globalised and competitive market.

Hong Kong Site 3 – A Hotel Perspective

As shown in the Planning Department's site plan, Site 3 will enjoy expansive harbour views from its northern section. The Hong Kong Observation Wheel located at piers 9 and 10 is a temporary structure and will not impede the site. One major drawback from a developer's point of view is the building height restriction of 50 meters. Somewhat unusual for Hong Kong, the tender process is conducted in a two-envelope scheme with equal weighting between design proposals and price. A comprehensive list, by Hong Kong standards, of requirements is stipulated in the 33-page planning brief.

PolyU Study Finds Backpackers Make a Difference

Targeting the backpacker segment may be an effective means of diversifying Hong Kong's tourism market and promoting sustainable tourism, according to Dr Wantanee Suntikul, Dr Denis Tolkach, Dr Elizabeth Agyeiwaah (Ph.D. graduate) and Mr Ching-Nok Lung (BSc graduate) of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. In a recently published article, the researchers revealed that, according to survey results, "backpackers are pushed by the search for new ideas and pulled by the unique food culture of Hong Kong". Destination marketers in the city should also be aware that backpackers are more likely to support the local economy than other types of tourists, many of whom visit because of its reputation as an international shopping destination.
