Lisa DeSantis has been appointed as director of sales at Homewood Suites by Hilton

DeSantis joins the Ithaca team from her most recent role as a project assistant for Hotel eSolutions/HRM in Geneva, NY, where she provided e-commerce management solutions to independent hoteliers. Her prior experience includes serving as sales and catering manager for the Genesee Grande Hotel in Syracuse, director of sales for the Holiday Inn at the University in Binghamton, NY, and director of catering for the Owego Treadway Inn and Conference Center in Owego, NY. DeSantis graduated from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas with a Bachelor’s Degree in Hotel Administration. She is an active business member of the Tioga County Chamber of Commerce, and resides in Owego, NY.

Cornell Roundtable Finds Strengthened Human Resources Policies Help Offset Recession's Negative Effects

Participants at the recent Cornell HR Executive Roundtable focused on how to generate light for employees in the midst of economic gloom. Held during the February 2010 HR in Hospitality™ Conference in Las Vegas, the roundtable comprised two sessions focused on key HR issues for hospitality managers: changes in HR law and the difficulty of maintaining a balance between brand management and controlling costs. The roundtable conversation then continued with participants leading drill down discussions where all conference participants were invited to join in and ask questions.

$1 Million Grant Establishes Conrad N. Hilton Foundation Scholarship at the Cornell School of Hotel Administration

The Conrad N. Hilton Foundation has granted the Cornell School of Hotel Administration (SHA) $1 million to establish the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation Scholarship fund for undergraduate students. This two-year, current-use scholarship, will provide tuition support for ten to fifty students each year and comes at a time when the need for financial aid is at an unprecedented high.

Missy Stoner has been appointed as General Manager at the Homewood Suites by Hilton

Missy Stoner has been promoted to general manager of the Homewood Suites by Hilton in Ithaca, NY. Waterford Hotel Group, a national hotel management firm, professionally operates the 91-room Homewood Suites. As general manager, Stoner will oversee all operational, sales and administrative aspects of the hotel. She most recently served as the hotel’s director of sales, and has more than 15 years of hospitality sales experience. “Missy has done a wonderful job for us at the Homewood Suites and is well-respected by the hotel team. She is most deserving of this promotion and we wish her great success in this new role,” commented Rob Winchester, president for Waterford Hotel Group. Stoner currently resides in Skaneateles, NY.

Cornell School of Hotel Administration Faculty Appointed to Endowed Professorships

The Cornell University Board of Trustees has approved professorship appointments for three School of Hotel Administration (SHA) faculty members. Mike Lynn has been appointed the Burton M. Sack '61 Professor in Food and Beverage Management, Tim Hinkin has been appointed the Georges and Marian St. Laurent Professor in Applied Business Management, and Kate Walsh has been appointed the Fred G. Peelen Professor of Hospitality Global Strategy. Each of the appointments went into effect on January 1, 2010.

Cornell Roundtable Shows Connection of Strong Sales with Employee and Guest Satisfaction

A critical aspect of hotel and restaurant management is making sure that employees are satisfied and loyal, because you cannot have satisfied guests with unhappy employees. Participants in the Center for Hospitality Research (CHR) Guest Service Processes and Outcomes Roundtable examined this critical connection, with an eye to improving sales. They discussed research that showed that working to make sure that guests are highly satisfied is worth the trouble, because highly satisfied guests are more loyal and spend more money than those who are merely satisfied. The CHR roundtable, held in September 2009, was chaired by Alex Susskind, an associate professor at the School of Hotel Administration.

Timothy J. Dick Wins 2009 MMH Outstanding Alumnus Award from the Cornell School of Hotel Administration

Timothy J. Dick is the winner of the 2009 MMH Outstanding Alumnus of the Year Award, presented by the Masters of Management in Hospitality (MMH) program at the Cornell School of Hotel Administration. A 1988 graduate of the program, Dick is senior vice president at TriMont Real Estate Advisors in Atlanta. He will be honored at the eighth annual MMH Reception in New York City, which will be held at the W New York on November 8 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
