According to a new survey from CheapHotels.org, hotels in New York City, and in particular in New Jersey around the MetLife Stadium where the championship game will take place, are charging strongly higher rates than usual for the Super Bowl weekend of February 1–3, 2014.

As of Q3 2013 the Total Construction Pipeline stands at 2,819 Projects/ 358,691 Rooms, a year-over-year (YOY) increase of just 2% by projects and 5% by rooms. Hotels Under Construction have uptrended for nine quarters and are now at 710 Projects/ 92,065 Rooms, a YOY increase of 27% for Projects and 30% for Rooms. Totals for Hotels Scheduled to Start in the Next 12 Months have increased off the bottom established in Q2 2012 and stand at 1,008 Projects/ 122,905 Rooms, a YOY increase of 17% and 22% respectively. Projects in Early Planning have been in steady decline since their peak in Q4 2010, and show a YOY decrease of 19% for Projects and 15% for Rooms.

The team at TrustYou, working in conjunction with Donna Quadri-Felitti, Ph.D., at New York University, Preston Robert Tisch Center for Hospitality, Tourism, and Sports Management, has developed its first quarterly report identifying key trends in travelers' reviews and hotel satisfaction. Based on a sample of more than 250,000 reviews of US-based hotels from across 250-plus sources, the data and insights are segmented by region and major markets versus secondary ones. Review scores are based on TrustScore, TrustYou's aggregate score out of 100, pulling from all reviews written worldwide.

New York is experiencing its biggest hotel expansion in a generation, attracting a host of new brands and developers betting that the good times will continue. But the race to build or convert dusty properties into modern lodgings already has sparked a debate about whether the additional rooms can be absorbed without putting downward pressure on hotel-room rates by next year. The number of hotel rooms in Manhattan is expected to rise about 10% to more than 90,000 by the end of 2014, says Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels, which tracks hotel projects planned and under way. Manhattan's expected lodging growth tops the U.S. by a wide stretch and is more than double the rate of the next fastest-growing major markets, Miami and Washington, according to forecasts from Lodging Econometrics.
