Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group today announced that it has signed an agreement to manage a new, luxury hotel currently under construction in Pudong, Shanghai. The hotel is scheduled to open in 2013.

The melody kept humming at the back of my head when I returned to the Ritz Carlton Pu Dong (Shanghai). Without missing a beat, The Bellboy outside of the Hotel's front doors ran up to me as soon as he caught sight of me trundling up the pathway with my roller-bag, and blurted out in perfect pitch - "Welcome Back - Mr. Ronson". I should not have been surprised by this. I am absolutely convinced that my mug shot had been pre-circulated to 'The Ladies and Gentlemen' of the Ritz Carlton Pu Dong after I documented my experience during my first visit. But to their credit, they lost no time to make sure all memories of that stay were no more.

Langham Hotels International has appointed Henk Meyknecht as the new managing director of its first boutique property in China - The Langham, Yangtze Boutique, Shanghai, which opened in May 2009. Prior to joining The Langham, Yangtze Boutique, Shanghai, Meyknecht’s was previously area general manager for Marco Polo Hotels China, based in Beijing. After an interminable long wait, this urban resort nestled between Jing An Park and the elevated Yan An highway in bustling Shanghai threw open its doors to the public just a few weeks ago. And first impression is…the delayed launch was well worth it! What was initially designed as an "Exclusive" property with club-like access to its F&B outlets solely by residents was altered to welcome non-residents as well. Some of that feel still filters through with the walled garden environment surrounding the hotel and Club floors between levels 20 and 26 that suggest you are part of a select crowd.
Long taxi rides are a fact of life in Shanghai so arriving at one’s destination is often something to be eagerly awaited – even if the trip entails travelling a short distance - from my flat to the four-day old Peninsula Shanghai. Or perhaps amid the hype, one should approach the end of this journey with breathless anticipation, traffic notwithstanding.
