Digital marketing for hotels is complex. In an ideal world every hotel would like 100% of their online bookings to be made directly with the hotel via their website, mobile website or via their Facebook page. The reality however is that this is almost never possible unless you are the only operator in town. Most hotels will therefore use third party distributors like OTAs or the GDS network to complement their direct sales efforts, and then work to get a good balance between them.

PolyU Study Finds Distance Differentiates Business Travellers

The business tourism market is not homogenous, according to Professor Bob McKercher and Grace Ho of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in a recently published research paper. The "filtering effect" of distance influences the tourist profiles and behavioural patterns of business visitors from short- and long-haul source markets. Focusing on in-bound tourists to Hong Kong, the researchers reveal that despite general similarities, the two types of visitor have different profiles and travel, activity and expenditure patterns. Knowledge of these differences, they argue, will be beneficial to hospitality and tourism enterprises and the local destination marketing organisation.

Mael Vastine has been appointed as General Manager at OZO Wesley Hong Kong

Holding a bachelor degree in international business and information technology as well as a master degree in management, Mael has built his career within the Accor Group since 2006. Starting as a General Manager of three hotels under various Accor brands in London, he was then promoted to be Area General Manager of London. He moved to China in 2009 as General Manager of Ibis Beijing Sanyuan, followed by the position of Director Delegate to supervise 18 Ibis properties in Eastern China. Prior to joining ONYX Hospitality Group, Mael was the Resident Manager of the Ibis Hong Kong Central and Sheung Wan Hotel. Mael will lead the operations team of OZO Wesley and report to Simon Dell – Vice President of Operations of ONYX’s North Asia division.
