Why create a marketing strategy calendar

When we talk about marketing strategy with our clients, in general, most hotels start to speak about discounts throughout the year. These offers have a place in most revenue plans. The risk is using them reactively. When a soft week triggers a last-minute discount, a hotel may give up rate without generating enough incremental demand to justify it. A stronger approach identifies need periods in advance and establishes when an offer, and which offer, can profitably change the outcome. Cornell's hospitality research has tracked this economic concept for years: Pricing below their competitive set often gained occupancy but produced lower relative RevPAR. The takeaway is not that hotels should never discount. It is that a lower rate must generate enough incremental, profitable demand to outweigh the revenue given up. Implementing a marketing strategy calendar changes the timing of that decision. Instead of treating every soft week as a last-minute problem, it identifies which weeks get an offer, which weeks hold rate, and the level of spend each period deserves, so a discount only shows up where it actually pays for itself. In our previous guide, Budgeting 101, we covered how to set the number, including how much to spend and where it comes from. In this strategy guide, we’ll go over how to create a marketing strategy calendar that determines where to spend that budget and on what.

An important note to keep in mind for 2027

Properties across the United States saw increased demand throughout June and July 2026 driven by one-time, milestone events such as the FIFA World Cup and the America250 anniversary. Treating those months as normal comps can artificially inflate expectations for 2027, leaving your hotel underprepared and underfunded for the demand patterns that need support. Budget June and July 2027 on their own logic, market conditions, and forward-looking demand signals rather than carrying forward 2026 actuals.

A full calendar of promotions isn’t a strategy. Every campaign needs a reason to run, a demand gap to address, and a clear measure of success.

The next guide in Cendyn’s Digital marketing decoded series helps you turn your annual budget into an actionable marketing strategy calendar. Learn when to protect rate, when to create demand, and how to align your offers and channels with what your hotel actually needs.

Inside the guide, you’ll learn how to:

  • Set goals that guide spending. Decide when to prioritize profitability and when to drive occupancy.

  • Plan around demand. Map milestone events and need periods before assigning budget.

  • Give every offer a purpose. Match promotions to the dates and audiences they’re designed to influence.

  • Make your channel mix work harder. Adjust paid media, CRM, direct, and OTA activity to each period’s objective.

  • Build flexibility into your budget. Establish a reserve with clear triggers for when to deploy it.

  • Bring it all together. Create a one-page plan that aligns marketing, revenue management, and ownership.
