Jakob Helgen has been appointed as General Manager at JW Marriott Hotel Tokyo
JW Marriott Hotel Tokyo, which debuted in October 2025 as the brand’s new Japan flagship hotel, today announces the appointment of Jakob Helgen as General Manager, effective June 28, 2026. With more than 22 years of global hospitality leadership experience at Marriott International, Helgen will oversee all hotel operations, guiding the continued growth and positioning of JW Marriott’s newest luxury destination in Japan.
A native of Sweden, he most recently served as Area Vice President for Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar from 2019 to 2024, leading regional operations during a period of unprecedented growth. Under his leadership, Marriott International expanded its footprint across the region from 50 to 80 hotels, including a doubling of the company’s presence in Vietnam from 10 to 20 hotels.
Previously, Helgen held senior leadership roles as Market Vice President for South China and later as Area Vice President overseeing Hong Kong, Macau, Hainan and Taiwan, where he played an instrumental role in Marriott International’s expansion into the Macau and Taiwan markets.
He began his career with Marriott International in 2002 as Director of Food & Beverage at Renaissance Riverside Hotel Saigon. Helgen subsequently held operational leadership roles at JW Marriott Mumbai and JW Marriott Seoul, before joining the Hong Kong regional office in 2007 as Area Director of Operations for China. Over the course of his career, he has held numerous leadership positions across Asia Pacific, driving operational excellence and long-term business growth.
Prior to joining Marriott International, he built a strong foundation in food and beverage operations at Relais & Châteaux properties and Michelin-starred restaurants across Sweden, Norway, the United Kingdom and France. He studied Hotel Management in Neuchâtel, Switzerland and earned an Executive MBA from the University of Gothenburg School of Business, Economics and Law in 2022.
