PolyU Study Finds Tourism an Important Contributor to China-Taiwan Relations

As China's global influence continues to grow, the relationship between mainland China and Taiwan is more important than ever, and tourism can make an important positive contribution according to Dr Mimi Li and Shanzhui Qui of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and co-authors. In a recent study that elicited the views of mainland Chinese tourists to Taiwan, the researchers show that the increase in tourism between the two places has already had a positive influence on the "long-term peace-building effort" and that it will "facilitate political reconciliation and mutual recognition" in the future.

PolyU Study Finds Understanding Online Complaints Crucial for Hotels in Mainland China

Hotels in China should take the opportunity to learn about how they can improve their services by understanding and acting on customers' online reviews, according to Dr Norman Au and Professor Rob Law of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and a co-researcher. In a recently published article, the researchers examine the content of online hotel reviews posted by guests, identifying cultural differences in the nature and number of complaints made by Western and Chinese customers. They advise that hotel managers need to understand these differences so that they can use them to "build strong brand value" and avoid the "devastating consequences" of poor business practices being exposed to the public.

PolyU Study Finds Information Given Critical to Selling Travel through Television

The successful sale of travel products on TV shopping channels benefits from the emotional connection established with and depth of information presented to the viewer, according to Professor Brian King of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and co-authors in a recently published article. Drawing on the concepts of "information transportation" and "information richness", the researchers show that viewers presented with the right types of information are likely to perceive purchasing a travel product on TV as less risky than they otherwise would have, and thus be more likely to actually purchase the product. Their findings, the researchers argue, provide "a starting point to understand consumers' purchase intentions for travel products in non-store retailing".

Chinese Dragon Still Building Steam With Strong Growth in Chinese International Travel Numbers

The continued, sustained growth in the number of Chinese international travelers presents huge opportunities for the global tourism industry and hoteliers, reveals the Hotels.com® Chinese International Travel Monitor (CITM) 2015. According to the latest major annual study from Hotels.com, tech-savvy, younger and more affluent Chinese form a substantial part of the 20 percent growth in outbound mainland Chinese travelers, reaching 107 million in 2014[1]. The report also highlights the need for hoteliers to cater to Chinese travelers' needs such as Chinese-speaking staff, Chinese-language tourist guides and dedicated websites.

Hong Kong: PolyU Released Report on 2014 Tourist Satisfaction and Tourism Service Quality Indices

The School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) released a report on the PolyU Tourist Satisfaction Index (PolyU TSI) and the Tourism Service Quality Index (PolyU TSQI), presenting both indices for Hong Kong in the year 2014. The 2014 PolyU TSI and PolyU TSQI stood at 74.50 and 74.51 respectively, both recording year-on-year drops.
