Ahead of World Oceans Day (June 8), Iberostar Group is opening a new land-based coral lab in the heart of the Caribbean. It will help protect essential ocean life from rising global temperatures in the future—and defend against a new fast-moving coral pandemic today.
This week Saira Hospitality kicked off the largest training program in the organization's history. In partnership with Moskito Island, Necker Island, Rosewood Little Dix Bay, Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina and Bitter End Yacht Club, Saira Hospitality has established an eight-week pop-up school for 100 students. The British Virgin Islands Tourist Board has also been supportive of the program, assisting with marketing the program, sourcing students and trainers, contributing to student information days and providing advice and guidance for the program. The full program is provided to accepted students from local communities at no cost and is hosted Monday through Friday on two main islands (Virgin Gorda and Tortola) to accommodate applicant interest. All trainers for these Saira courses are residents in the area. The program in the British Virgin Islands will allow each partnering organization to interview Saira graduates in their hiring, bringing members of the local community into the rebuilding of the hospitality market in the region.
Hon. Obie Wilchcombe, Chairman of the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), chaired his first meeting of the Council of Tourism Ministers and Commissioners since being elected Chairman last September, resulting in positive discussions on best practices, funding cooperative regional activities and hosting the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Global Conference on Building Partnerships for Sustainable Tourism for Development next November. The Council of Ministers meeting took place during the recently completed Caribbean Travel Marketplace on Paradise Island, Bahamas. As the policy-making body of the CTO, the Council of Ministers worked as a team during the January meeting to decide on matters related to funding on behalf of the Organization's Dutch, English, French and Spanish-speaking members. The Minister also discussed using the latest technology for more effective passenger facilitation, and maximizing the benefits of public sector/private sector partnerships to improve the Caribbean's competitive position. The meeting also determined the way forward in regard to championing the cause of Caribbean tourism at the highest levels in the Caribbean and around the world.
The Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) has named the winners for the inaugural "CHIEF Awards" honoring member hotels and tourism-related enterprises for best practices in Business Operations, Sales & Marketing and Sustainable Practices. Awardees were announced at the Caribbean Hospitality Industry Exchange Forum (CHIEF) which took place Oct. 2 - 4, 2015 at El Conquistador Resort, A Waldorf Astoria Resort in Puerto Rico.
The Caribbean Hotel & Tourism Association (CHTA) will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary in 2012 and will host a Golden Jubilee Gala on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 7 pm in Montego Bay, Jamaica. The formal event will feature a gathering of many of the individuals who have led the hospitality and tourism industry over the past 50 years along with the unveiling of From Pirates to Hoteliers, a glossy, 200-page coffee-table quality book that commemorates the history of Caribbean tourism.
The Yéle Haiti Foundation, an established leader in recovery efforts in Haiti, announced the formation of a new alliance to launch a trailblazing pilot hospitality vocational training initiative in one of the country's key port cities. Working with HVS, the leading global hospitality consulting and services firm, the program will infuse up to 120 area residents with core skills. The intent is to educate current and aspiring hotel employees and accelerate self-sufficiency, economic development, and job creation. Yéle Haiti's new program will debut in September 2011 in Jacmel, one of Haiti's renowned tourist and resort destinations, which suffered severe damage after the earthquake.
