Philippe Clarinval has been appointed as Resident Manager at Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa

Desmond Hatton, general manager of Shangri-La's Rasa Sayang Resort and Spa, Penang, is pleased to announce the appointment of Philippe Clarinval as the resort's resident manager effective June 2010. Mr. Clarinval reports directly to the general manager and will play a vital role in overseeing the resort's operational activities, particularly in the areas of service and quality delivery in the rooms and food and beverage departments.

Carlos de la Barra has been appointed as Director of Food & Beverage at The Ritz-Carlton, Kuala Lumpur

Carlos' most recent position was Assistant Food and Beverage Director overseeing 5 Celebrity-Chef restaurants and 1 nightclub at the 1,500-room Atlantis hotel Palm Jumeirah, in Dubai, UAE. Previously Carlos's career has included numerous F&B leadership positions in his home town of Mexico City (Mexico) and Texas (USA), Restaurant and Beverage Manager at the Le Meridien Hotel, Kuala Lumpur before moving on to the Middle East. Carlos earned his Bachelor of Business Administration in Hospitality Marketing degree from Les Roches Hotel Management School in Switzerland. Carlos' appointment comes at a time when The Ritz-Carlton, Kuala Lumpur is continuing to showcase a series of new food & beverage developments including the Sunday Roast at The Lobby Lounge, breakfast at Li Yen Chinese restaurant, Carlton Gourmet and the continuing evolution of the recently refurbished César's restaurant.

Ian Barrow has been appointed as General Manager at Doubletree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur

Ian Barrow is a hospitality veteran with over 20 years’ experience, including 15 years of specialist hotel opening expertise. Much of his experience has been garnered in Asia, and he has lead many prestigious properties for international hotel brands in Shanghai, Dhaka, Katmandu, and various cities in Indonesia. Doubletree by Hilton, Kuala Lumpur, is the brand’s inaugural southeast Asian property, and its opening will mark the first full-service upscale hotel to open in the Malaysian capital this year. Doubletree by Hilton, Kuala Lumpur is scheduled to open in the second quarter of 2010.

Leo Frankel has been appointed as director of business development at Doubletree by Hilton Kuala Lumpur

Leo Frankel, has over 8 years of experience in the hotel industry mainly in the area of revenue management in key Hilton Worldwide properties in Europe and Asia. He joins the Doubletree by Hilton, Kuala Lumpur, from Hilton Shanghai, where he was a revenue manager since 2008. Doubletree by Hilton, Kuala Lumpur, is the brand’s inaugural southeast Asian property, and its opening will mark the first full-service upscale hotel to open in the Malaysian capital this year. Melvin Lim has been appointed as General Manager at Grand Millennium Kuala Lumpur

After almost five years managing two Millennium & Copthorne International hotels in Singapore- namely M Hotel and then Orchard Hotel, Mr Melvin Lim, who is currently General Manager at Orchard Hotel Singapore, will be taking the helm at our flagship-brand, 5-star Grand Millennium Kuala Lumpur Hotel effective 10 December 2009. Mr Lim brings with him a wealth of experience honed from his 18 years of experience as general manager and senior sales and marketing positions at several international luxury hotels and serviced residences in Asia, including Hong Kong, Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand and Myanmar. John Brock has been appointed as Executive Sous Chef at Golden Sands Resort

Brock’s significant culinary experience includes stints in the United Kingdom and France. He started his European adventure in Cambridge, United Kingdom as Chef de Partie Pastry for the two-Michelin star Midsummer House, followed by a stint as Head Chef for the Hotel Touring in Valloire, France. Preceding his European work experience, Brock started his career as a Demi Chef De Partie at the Crowne Plaza’s Victoria Street Café in Christchurch, New Zealand. There, he started honing his culinary skills before moving on to neighbouring Australia for a new challenge as a Demi Chef De Partie at the Grand Hyatt in Melbourne. Within a short time, Brock gained promotion to Chef De Partie upon his move to the Stokehouse Restaurant in St. Kilda Beach, Melbourne. Born and raised in Wanganui, located on the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island, Brock completed his secondary education at the Wanganui Collegiate School before enrolling at the Wanganui Polytechnic where he obtained diplomas in Culinary Arts and Patisserie.

Denis Vecchiato has been appointed as Executive Chef at Hilton Petaling Jaya

Vecchiato, who began his culinary career 13 years ago in Venice, Italy, has worked in kitchens of luxury and upscale hotels across the world from Dubai and China to the Philippines and India. Trained at the Professional Institute ‘Elena Cornaro’ majoring in culinary and hotel management, Vecchiato remains as passionate about food today, as he was when he started his career 13 years ago, explaining “I’m extremely excited to have the opportunity to be a part of a brand with a legacy and reputation, such as Hilton. For me, being a chef is about delivering high quality, exciting food in a consistent manner, something I feel I will be able to achieve and look forward to doing at Hilton”.

Parent company has committed RM500mil for the expansion. SUBANG: Hospitality player Dorsett International Sdn Bhd aims to add 10 hotels to its existing chain of five hotels and resorts in Malaysia in five years, says president Eddie Tang. He said the parent company had allocated RM500mil for the expansion. Dorsett International, set up at the end of last year, is the Malaysian hospitality arm of Hong Kong-listed Far East Consortium International Ltd, which is mainly engaged in property development and hotel operations in China.

Betty Lim has been appointed as Director of Sales & Marketing at the Hard Rock Hotel Penang

Born and raised in Penang, Betty has 17 years of hospitality experience with some international brands including Shangri-La and InterContinental. Prior to joining Hard Rock Hotel, she was Director of Sales at Parkroyal Penang. Betty’s new role is to oversee and champion all aspects of sales and marketing activities to open the first Hard Rock Hotel in Malaysia. John Primmer, General Manager of Hard Rock Hotel Penang notes, “Betty has a wealth of experience in promoting Penang as a destination. Her bubbly nature and extensive contacts makes her an ideal fit for this resort”. Scheduled to open in October 2009, Hard Rock Hotel Penang will be the first musically themed resort in Malaysia, which aims to infuse new excitement and energy into the popular holiday destination. Bruno Cristol has been appointed as General Manager at Shangri-La’s Golden Sands Resort

Previously, he was the Resident Manager at Shangri-La Hotel, Sydney, where he was actively involved in the renovation and re-branding of the hotel, which subsequently earned the hotel awards such as the “Best Luxury Accommodation” from the New South Wales Tourism Award and “Best Deluxe Hotel of the Year 2006” from the Australian Hotel Association (AHA). Mr Cristol first joined the Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts group in 2001 as the Director of Food and Beverage a key role in the hotel’s upgrading and renovation programme.
