NOVUM Hospitality"s niu hotel in Haarlem is quickly taking shape and will open earlier than anticipated: Featuring 84 rooms on 3,000 square meters, the innovative, mid-range hotel niu will open its doors in the Dutch city of Haarlem by the end of March 2018 instead of in the second quarter of the year, as previously planned. Preparing for the new EU General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR), a framework legislated by all EU member states with a required compliance date of May 25, 2018, international nonprofit association Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals (HFTP®) recruited a team of experts to develop Hospitality Data Protection Officer (HDPO) guidelines and supporting resources for the industry. In addition, the group is designing a certification program specific for HDPOs to demonstrate their competence with the specialized position. A key requirement of the GDPR is that companies who handle large stores of sensitive personal information must assign a DPO, and it is estimated that this could open approximately 28,000 positions across all industries.

Singapore's First Sponsor Group has agreed to acquire the third-through-ninth floors of the Poortgebouw Hoog Catharijne in Utrecht, the Netherlands, with Hoog Catharijne Mall of the Netherlands for about $29.43 million. As part of the conditional sale and purchase agreement, First Sponsor will develop the approximately 124,900 square-foot leasable space into two hotels, The Business Times reported. One will be under the Hampton by Hilton brand (or a hotel brand of similar standing) while the other one will be under the Crowne Plaza brand or a brand of similar standing.

In 2016, in Amsterdam there were almost 1.7 million booked nights through Airbnb. An increase of as much as 125% compared to 2015. The market share exploded thereby to 10.7% (from 5.4%) compared with hotels. For the first time, Airbnb in the Netherlands was also analyzed in The Hague and Rotterdam. The market share here was 7.3% and 6.5%, respectively, according to a joint study by Colliers International and Hotel School in The Hague. Most Airbnb bookings take place in the central part of the city. 64% of room nights are booked in five districts: Centre-West, Baarsjes & Old West, Centre-East, Pipe and Westerpark. Contrary to what Airbnb says, tourists do not spread throughout the city.
