Hoteliers in the Netherlands and Belgium expect that the corona crisis will have a long-term impact, but will eventually recover. This is shown in new research by Horwath HTL. The domestic market will recover relatively quickly and perhaps even come out of the fray more strongly, but the international market is facing a slow recovery. A large number of closed hotels are now cautiously opening again, but revenues in the first half of the year have been at least halved. The projections for the second half of the year also show much lower occupancies and revenues. After the crisis, which hoteliers expect to last for at least 6 to 12 months, a slow recovery is expected.
The Dutch government plans to tighten the rules for businesses claiming coronavirus relief after one of the nation's most successful tech companies was accused of seeking state aid while paying billions of dollars to shareholders.
Hotel website Booking.com, until recently one of the most profitable companies in the Netherlands, has asked for government support as the number of bookings plunges to 15% of those of a year ago, according to the Volkskrant and the Financieele Dagblad. The company has asked for help to pay its 5,500 workers in the Netherlands and 48 customer service staff who were still in their probationary period have been let go as the impact of coronavirus on tourism continues to bite, the Volkskrant said. The company is a major employer in Amsterdam with a IT workforce comprising 80 different nationalities. According to the VK, the average salary at the Dutch operation is €47,000 a year.

From 1 March, Wencke Bolsius will start as General Manager at Swissôtel Amsterdam. After almost ten years as Head of Revenue for the Hotel Okura Amsterdam, she takes over from Harold Kluit, former General Manager of Swissôtel Amsterdam. Wencke has more than 25 years of experience in the luxury hotel industry. She fulfilled the position of Revenue Manager at the 5-star Bilderberg Garden Hotel and the 4-star boutique hotel Bilderberg Jan Luyken in Amsterdam. With this new position, she joins the international Accor family.
Cycas Hospitality has signed a lease agreement with Van der Linde Architecten and Development company to manage IHG's first new Holiday Inn Express & Suites concept in Europe, which is expected to open in The Netherlands in early 2021.

The nomination of Lluís Serra, managing director of EUHT StPOL, as a President of EUHOFA International has taken place at the General Assembly, held in Kathmandu (Nepal). For the first time in over 60 years of this association's career, the presidency falls to the representative of a Hotel-School in the Spanish State. Lluís Serra, managing director of the University College of Hospitality Management and Culinary Arts of Sant Pol de Mar (EUHT StPOL), affiliated to Universitat de Girona, has become the 8th president of EUHOFA International, being the first time that this position is held by a representative of the Spanish State. The position was approved at the recent General Assembly that was held in Kathmandu (Nepal) on November 29th, at which he was unanimously elected. Founded in 1955, EUHOFA INTERNATIONAL is the first international association of universities and schools of hospitality management and tourism. It was created by the Alpine hotel schools with the aim of assessing the latest trends and development of the hotel sector and its impact on hotel training. In 1974 it became an advisory member of the Council of Europe. Currently, EUHOFA International has more than 200 universities and schools of hospitality management, tourism and culinary arts on five continents. The members of the association are the directors and deans of these institutions, leaders in their territory. EUHT StPOL has been a member of EUHOFA International since 1990, thus becoming the first school in Spain to do so. Together with EUHT StPOL, are also members of EUHOFA some of the most prestigious hotel schools in the world such as l'École Hôtelière de Lausanne (Switzerland), Hotelschool The Hague (Netherlands), Johnson & Wales University (United States) or École from Savignac (France), among others.
