Honduras jockeys for ecotourism favor

The Lodge at Pico Bonito, a 22-cabin ecoresort on Honduras’s Caribbean coast, is a lush, attractive retreat great for birding and hiking enthusiasts. But the Small Luxury Hotels of the World member has yet to find its groove. “We’ve had incredible coverage but haven’t had great occupancy,” said owner Robert Vinelli, whose property’s occupancy averages in the low 60s. Vinelli’s lament speaks to a larger problem: the Central American country is playing second fiddle to more developed tourism destinations such as Guatemala and Nicaragua. But it’s trying, and it has plenty to offer investors; archeology buffs; and birding, hiking and diving enthusiasts.
