Minor Hotel Group further strengthens entry into Mozambique with Anantara and AVANI brands

Minor Hotel Group (MHG), operator of over 100 hotels, resorts and serviced suites in 14 countries across Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Africa and the Indian Ocean, is pleased to announce the addition of three properties in Mozambique to its portfolio and a 25% equity investment in the properties. They will be reflagged to MHG's Anantara and AVANI brands later this year and take the total number of MHG properties in operation to 108 and the total number of rooms to over 13,000.

Marriott says to open 30 new hotels in South Africa by 2020 | reuters.com

Marriott International will open 30 new hotels in South Africa by 2020 as it seeks to expand across the continent following its 2 billion rand ($190 million) buyout of Protea Hospitality, a senior official said on Monday. The New York-listed hotel group is targeting the bulk of its additional growth in Nigeria, Egypt, the UAE and Saudi Arabia, as it aims to triple revenue and rooms to 75,000 across Africa and the Middle East within six years. The hotels under construction in Africa, which will have a total of 5,000 rooms, will require around $1.5 billion of investment by its real estate partners, Marriott's Middle East and Africa head Alex Kyriakidis told the Reuters Africa Summit.

Marriott CEO Arne Sorenson Discusses Protea acquisition

Arne Sorenson, CEO & president of Marriott International, discusses his company's acquisition of the largest hotel company in Africa. Marriott International, Inc. became the largest hotel company in Africa according to published information, and nearly doubled its presence in its Middle East and Africa region to more than 160 hotels and 23,000 rooms as it completed its acquisition of the 116-hotel Protea Hospitality Group (PHG), based in South Africa. Marriott now operates or franchises more than 4,000 hotels in 79 countries.

Hyatt Continues Brand Expansion in Africa with Plans for Two Hotels in Tanzania

Hyatt Hotels Corporation (NYSE: H) announced today that a Hyatt affiliate has entered into a management agreement with ASB Holdings Limited for two Hyatt-branded hotels in Tanzania – Park Hyatt Zanzibar and Hyatt Regency Arusha. The hotels will join the previously announced Park Hyatt Marrakech and Hyatt Place Taghazout in Morocco, as well Hyatt Dakar in Senegal. There is currently one hotel in Tanzania, Hyatt Regency Dar es Salaam, The Kilimanjaro, which opened in 2011.
