Back To School At Hong Kong's New Learning Hotel | huffingtonpost.com

This week, the nearly 2,000 faculty and students starting classes at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University's School of Hotel & Tourism Management (SHTM), are getting a whole new $100 million "lab" to play in. For the first time, courses have been redesigned to incorporate the school's brand-new Hotel ICON into students' learning experience. General Manager Richard Hatter explained that they didn't want to throw the usual lavish hotel grand opening party. Instead, in keeping with the mission of the hotel as an integral part of hospitality teaching and research, the ICON is celebrating with a Hospitality Design Conference on the 21st of this month.

India: Shortage of management grads dogs hotel industry | mydigitalfc.com

If India’s domestic hotel industry adds the expected 10,000 plus room capacity in the next two to three years, it may face a severe shortage of skilled manpower. As compared with a potential demand of 60,000-70,000 skilled individuals in the next two to three years, only 15,000 hotel management graduates are expected to be available, said Manish Khanna, managing director and chief executive officer of UEI Global, a unit of Berggruen Holdings, USA. Hotel industry officials believe the situation will worsen, if not improve in the near future.

Hilton Worldwide Names Chairman for Greater China

Hilton Worldwide today announced the appointment of Edmond Ip as Chairman, Greater China. In this new role, Edmond will act as an adviser to Hilton Worldwide, primarily overseeing all of the company’s operational interests in Greater China, including implementing a new organizational structure, assisting in recruiting best-in-class talent, and aggregating the growth from the numerous hotel openings in the next few years. Ip will be based between Singapore and Shanghai.

IHG Invests in China’s Future Hospitality Talent with Three New IHG Academies

As the first international hotel group that entered China 27 years ago, IHG is now China's largest and fastest growing international hotel company. With 150 hotels currently open, IHG is also China's biggest employer in the hotel industry with 52,000 employees. IHG plans double its presence with opening of another 150 hotels which require an additional 90,000 employees in the next five years.

The School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has strengthened its efforts in nurturing hospitality graduates to address the growing demands of the hospitality and tourism industry in Hong Kong and the region. The SHTM has recently moved into its new premises in Tsim Sha Tsui East and revamped more than 30 subjects within its undergraduate curriculum to tie in with the soft opening of its teaching and research hotel (Hotel ICON) by phases in this year's second quarter.

PolyU celebrates the topping-out for the Redevelopment of Pak Sui Yuen

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) today (11 March) hailed the topping-out for the redevelopment of its former staff quarters Pak Sui Yuen in Tsimshatsui East. The new premises, which is scheduled for completion in late 2010, will be home to its world-renowned School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) and a unique teaching hotel. With its distinct design and prominent location by the side of Cross-Harbour Tunnel’s Kowloon entrance, the new infrastructure is set to become a new icon in the heart of the city.

MAH Appoints Reginald T Pereira as New CEO

Malaysian Association of Hotels, (MAH), the umbrella body for hotels in Malaysia announced the appointment of Reginald T Pereira as the Association’s new Chief Executive Officer (CEO). As a well-respected and prominent figure in the hospitality industry, Reginald brings more than two decades of passion, management experience and proven record of success to MAH. Reginald shall be responsible to oversee the MAH Secretariat and the Malaysian Association of Hotels Training & Education Center (MAHTEC) and work towards the objectives of the Association with effect from 1 February 2010.
