Chinese Tourism at a Difficult Time

The global tourism industry could not have been hurt so badly any time in history other than the year 2019−20. The tourism industry involves temporary displacement of people from one place to another, whereby demand is generated. Thus, any factor that impedes tourist flow will cause a negative demand shock in the industry one way or another. The impact on tourism demand depends on the nature of the shock as well as how long it persists.

Marriott Is Already Reopening China Hotels During Coronavirus Crisis

Marriott was already having trouble in Asia-Pacific in 2019 before the coronavirus impact hit. The company isn't forecasting a major impact outside of Asia, and it's already reopening hotels inside China. It pays to collect fees — and not actually own or run hotels — during a crisis like this.

The Story of Oyo’s Troubles Is the Story of Modern India

What's happening with Oyo cannot be looked at separately from the modern Indian milieu that gave birth to it, and in which it operates. Oyo now needs to rise above that legacy and bring in the global business practices that ensure it survives and thrives in the future.

Low Margins And Hidden Costs: Why Small Hotel Owners Are Feeling Cheated By OYO

When OYO first shifted to the hotel franchise business in 2015, it seemed like a great proposition for budget hotels. Struggling with lack of visibility and guidance on how to upgrade their properties, small hotel owners ticked along thanks to word-of-mouth referrals and an unorganised system of touts, tour operators and agents.

Is There a Solution to Overtourism: Lessons from Borocay Island, The Philippines

In 2018, so-called overtourism has begun to emerge as a serious and dangerous phenomenon. Various cities, cultural heritage sites, recreational areas and islands have been affected by this phenomenon. Overtourism is often associated with extremely crowded tourism destinations and has become a topic of great concern for all stakeholders. According to the UN World Tourism Organization, 'overtourism' is: the impact of tourism on a destination, or parts thereof, that excessively influences perceived quality of life of citizens and/or quality of visitors' experiences in a negative way. As a result, tourism experts are—by and large—at a loss as to how to cope with both the increasing tourist numbers and tourism's multifaceted impacts on these destinations.

The True Story Behind the Movie Hotel Mumbai

On November 26, 2008, 10 young men in an inflatable dinghy came ashore in Mumbai, India, and slipped into the city undetected. They had been sent by Lashkar-e-Taiba, a Pakistani-based terrorist group. Armed with assault rifles, grenades and improvised explosive devices, they quickly fanned out across the city. Over the course of the next three days, the terrorists wreaked havoc, killing more than 170 people and bringing Mumbai to its knees.

Japan’s first 'dispersed' hotel opens in Kyoto

A quick drink at Enso Ango involves a little more effort than most hotels - the bar is in a different building from most of the bedrooms, a good 10-minute walk away. Breakfast in the hotel restaurant? That's a five-minute stroll to another building. With five separate locations around the centre of Kyoto, Enso Ango is Japan's first "dispersed" hotel, though scattering the rooms and amenities a few roads apart is not for lack of space: the aim is to immerse guests in the local culture.

PolyU Study Reveals What Second-Generation Migrant Tourists are Seeing

Tourists who visit their ancestral homelands carry with them personal connections that "influence how they gaze upon its people, culture and landscapes", according to Dr Wei-Jue Huang, Professor Brian King and Dr Wantanee Suntikul of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Through interviews with second-generation Chinese-Americans who recently visited China, the researchers found that instead of searching for the "exotic", as tourists normally do when visiting a foreign country, migrant tourists tend to seek out similarities that help them to feel connected with their families and heritage.

I have personally worked with a couple of third parties in the past, one that managed only the hiring process and the payroll portion, and one that actually managed the operations - under my team's supervision. I don't think it's fair giving an opinion based only on two precedents, but I can share I remember my experience when outsourcing operations as a challenging one.
