Asia’s largest sustainability forum opens at Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort & Spa

Asia's largest travel and tourism sustainability event, opened in Phuket yesterday, as Southeast Asia's hospitality industry came together in a spirit of collaboration to tackle the critical environmental issues facing resort destinations across the region. A year on from the inaugural edition of PHIST, the event is catching fire. A record attendance of 1,000 delegates attended this year's full-day event, which is being held Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort & Spa. PHIST is the brainchild of the Phuket Hotels Association, C9 Hotelworks and Greenview.Dedicated to generating fresh ideas and fostering a spirit of cooperation, the action-packed forum included a series of expert panels and discussions covering a range of vital topics, including destination management, development, ocean health, over-tourism, hotel operations and community tourism. There was also a series of practical workshops for green champions, hotel developers and social enterprises and more, plus an exhibition area showcasing green solutions, allowing hoteliers to interact with eco-suppliers. Speakers included local and international experts, including Raini Hamdi, Asia Editor, Skift; Sharry Sun, Global Head of Brand, Travelzoo; Jesper Palmqvist, STR's Area Director for Asia Pacific; Ang Choo Pin, Expedia's Senior Director of Government & Corporate Affairs; Guy Heywood, Chief Operating Officer, Six Senses Hotels Resorts Spas; and Franck Droin, Hotel Manager, Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok.This year's PHIST also celebrated the launch of the Great Big Green Hotel Guide, an important collaboration between the 74 members of the Phuket Hotels Association. Racing To Protect Our Planet With Shangri-La’s China-Wide “Race For Hope” Campaign

Shangri-La Group officially kicked off a China-wide CSR initiative "Race for Hope" (RFH) as part of the Group's environmental efforts to protect the planet. The RFH campaign will bring together all 50 Shangri-La, Kerry, Hotel Jen and Traders properties in Mainland China to join the social movement. It will also leverage China's leading digital platform - Ali Pay's Ant Forest programme - to engage its employees, guests and consumers to participate on this sustainability journey. The Shangri-La Group is the first international hotel company to work with Ali Pay on this innovative platform. The "Race for Hope" campaign aims to achieve 5,000 trees in two years when Shangri-La celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2021."Race for Hope" instils a sense of urgency to save our planet and it is also a competition for people to challenge themselves to change their behaviour and to convert a low carbon lifestyle into real tree planting. Shangri-La's guests and Ant Forest's users can easily support the RFH initiative by taking part in a variety of eco-friendly activities, for example, walking, jogging and using public transport to earn carbon points and water Shangri-La's online forest. All online participation will then turn into tangible results of real tree planting through Ant Forest and their NGO partners.In addition to the Ant Forest online programme, Shangri-La Group will organize the National Grand Beginning Race event in Shanghai and the hotels in different cities will roll out offline activities in late October. Participants can join a family-friendly 5km race or sign up for a fun-run competition to raise awareness for environmental protection and as a call for action in the local community.Everyone can do their part, everywhere, every day, to help protect the planet. Using Ali Pay's digital App, it only requires a few taps on the smart phone: open Alipay, scan "Shangri-La Ant Forest" QR code or search for "Shangri-La" on Ant Forest to access the Campaign and to begin the online tree planting.For local race registration, check with respective hotels' WeChat channels for more information. Deutsche Hospitality has joined forces with the Reiner Meutsch Fly & Help Foundation to assist with the building of schools in developing countries. The Akaryn Hotel Group has unveiled plans to become a single-use plastic free hotel company by 2020. The group's newest opening, akyra TAS Sukhumvit Bangkok, scheduled to open in May 2018, is set to lead the charge in this initiative by not having any single-use plastic in its rooms or food and beverage outlets. "Our eco-friendly approach in Bangkok began by sourcing glass bottles and containers, with a commitment to no single-use plastic used in the restaurants or bars. The hotel will extend the initiative for guests on the go with stylish akyra stainless steel water bottles presented on arrival that can be refilled anytime during their stay," said Anchalika Kijkanakorn, Founder and Managing Director of Akaryn Hotel Group.
