Harvey J. Thompson has been appointed as General Manager at W Taipei

Harvey John Thompson has been named the new General Manager of W Taipei. With more than 30 years of experience and knowledge in the hospitality industry, Thompson is responsible for all areas in the hotel including future development of associates, product improvement, and financial performance, peril of financial performance, brand compliance and guest satisfaction.Born in Sydney, Australia, Thompson’s career milestones include working in various reputable hotel chains in Fiji, France, Hong Kong and Malaysia. His first taste in the hospitality industry began at the tender age of 19, when he was Trainee Manager in Bronte Inn, Australia, an 80-room Boutique Hotel in Sydney. Thompson was exposed in different areas and quickly learnt the ropes of the hotel’s daily operations including rooms, kitchen and food and beverage.

Sammy Carolus has been appointed as General Manager at Grand Hyatt Taipei

Grand Hyatt Taipei has tapped a veteran of the hospitality industry in Asia, Sammy Carolus, to lead the property and its 1,000 staff as general manager. Carolus previously was general manager of Thailand’s Hyatt Regency Hua Hin. Carolus relocates to Taipei with more than 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry. He started as a sales executive with Hyatt Bali in his home country of Indonesia in 1992 and later served as associate director of business development and director of business development at Grand Hyatt Bali. In 2003, he became director of marketing for Hyatt Regency Hua Hin. A year later, he was transferred to Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok, where he helped launch several first-of-its-kind initiatives in the region, including the first residential-style event facility in the Asia Pacific region and Bangkok’s first residential spa. He was promoted to executive assistant manager of sales and marketing at Grand Hyatt Erawan Bangkok in 2009. Carolus took on his first general manager role in 2010, when he was selected to lead Hyatt Regency Hua Hin in the Gulf of Thailand.

Colin Chun has been appointed as Executive Chef at W Taipei

Born in Korea, Chef Chun grew up in the restaurant industry, debuted cooking professionally at the age of 20 at his family owned restaurant in Pusan. He then sharpened his culinary skill in several prestigious restaurants and hotels in Australia. With more than 18 years working experience in the industry, Chef Chun is introducing his contemporary, dynamic and surprising flavors to the Taiwan market. Before joining the W team, Chef Chun was the Sous Chef of Doyles Seafood Restaurant in Sydney, one of the most popular seafood establishments in the city since 1885. After a few years cultivating his skills in the premier fine dining Italian restaurant Nino Hideaway, Chef Chun joined Swissotel in Sydney where he had the chance to create dishes for the famous movie star, Hugh Jackman. One of Jackman’s favorite dishes - Poached salmon and steamed spinach - can be found in the healthy menu in the Kitchen Table. While working with Sheraton in Sydney, he was twice appointed to take charge of the Prime Minister’s Banquet for more than 400 guests. The charming movie star Orlando Bloom once came to Chef Chun’s kitchen at the Sheraton Sydney and requested that he be allowed to make a simple sandwich and salad for his beloved Miranda Kerr, a Victoria’s Secret model. Chef Chun ended up as his sous chef helping Orlando with his loving, caring dish.

Taieb TJ Joulak has been appointed as Hotel Manager at W Hotel Taipei

TJ’s began his Starwood journey since 2002 and started by opening the Iberostar Hammamet in Tunisia, the Sheraton Hotel & Towers Tunis, Tunisia, W Doha in Qatar, the W Istanbul in Turkey, W Bali and now W Taipei. He also worked at the world renown Hotel Grande Bretagne, a Luxury Collection Hotel in Athens Greece. TJ’s educational background includes a Higher National Diploma in Hotel Business Management at the University College Birmingham, UK where he finished as first in class and he also acquired a Degree (BA HONS) in International Marketing and Economics at Birmingham University, UK, and then completed an MBA in Economics and Finance for Hospitality from the same University. With Starwood, he achieved numerous courses through Cornell University.
