Positive Signs as UK Business Travel Agents Report 2010 Growth

Corporate travel specialists CT Business Travel are reporting positive increases in sales for the year to date. This certainly reflects the latest revised and much improved forecasts published by The International Air Transport Association (IATA), where it has stated it expects profits for the global airline industry to be in the region of US$2.5bn for 2010.

Ben Malpass has been appointed as head concierge at The Savoy

Double-award winning concierge Ben Malpass is the latest member of staff to be recruited to the much-delayed reopening of the Savoy hotel, London. Malpass is due to leave the four-star, 230-bedroom Cavendish London this week and expects to take up his new position as head concierge of the iconic five-star property, operated by Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, in July. Currently nearing the end of a refurbishment that will have far exceeded its original budget of £100m, the Savoy is now planned to reopen in September, having closed in December 2007. Originally from Australia, Malpass has been in the UK for 10 years, the past five years as head concierge at the Cavendish London, where Richard Jenkins, formerly assistant head converge at the hotel will replace him. He will head a team of 30, including concierges, door staff, valets, luggage porters and page boys.

Melanie Cash has been appointed as Director of Sales and Marketing at The Rocco Forte Collection’s Lowry Hotel

Melanie Cash joins The Lowry Hotel as Director of Sales and Marketing, managing a team of eight people across sales, PR, conference, revenue, groups and VIPs. Ms Cash has extensive industry knowledge, gained over her 25 years of experience in the hospitality business.Previous roles include Director of Sales at The Marriott Forest of Arden Hotel and Country Club; Training Manager for Marriott Hotels and UK and Ireland Sales Training Manager for The Hilton Group. In 2004 Ms Cash founded her own company providing consultancy and training for the hospitality industry. Key clients included The Grove, Hertfordshire; Millennium Copthorne; Alton Towers; Visit Cheshire and Chester and The Brewery in London. Most recently Melanie was working with The Belfry, where she maximised revenue and introduced new key accounts.

Peter Kienast has been appointed as General Manager at The Rocco Forte Collection’s Lowry Hotel

German-born Mr Kienast has an impressive 20 years experience in some of the most exclusive five star hotels across the world. Mr Kienast has held many varying roles within the hotel industry, beginning his career with the Kempinski Group with roles in Dallas, Munich, Budapest and Istanbul, focusing mainly on Food and Beverage. Following which he then held several senior roles across Western Europe including Food and Beverage Manager at The Langham in London; Food and Beverage Director of the renowned Reid’s Palace Hotel in Maderia and Executive Assistant of Badrutt’s Palace Hotel in St Moritz, where he oversaw a major renovation of the hotel and introduced new food and beverage concepts. In 2002, Mr Kienast took up his first General Manager position at the Grand Hotel Park, Gstaad where he repositioned the hotel in the Swiss market securing an award for best hotel in Switzerland in the Conde Nast Traveller Gold list. After the hotel was sold Peter moved to Portugal to manage the Le Meridien Hotel Dona Filipa & San Lorenzo Golf Course.In 2006 Mr Kienast was appointed General Manager of the luxurious and innovative Schloss Elmau in Germany. He led the pre-opening strategy and development of the hotel including planning, interior design and marketing. During his tenure at the hotel it won numerous awards and accolades including the Best Resort Hotel in Germany and winner of the best Spa in Europe.

Stephen Ball has been appointed as Manager at Legacy Three Swans hotel

Stephen Ball has joined the Legacy Hotels and Resorts Group as manager of the Legacy Three Swans hotel in Hungerford, Berkshire. Ball, 29, previously spent five years managing the Walnut Tree hotel in West Camel, Somerset. He has spent all his working life in the hotel industry, having graduated from the University of Plymouth with a degree in hospitality and management. Legacy, which was founded in 2005, operates hotels across the UK and southern Spain and took over the management of the 25-room Three Swans hotel in September 2009.
