Mark Sherburne has been appointed as General Manager at The Carolina Inn

Destination Hotels & Resorts (DHR) announced that Mark Sherburne has been appointed to General Manager at The Carolina Inn. Sherburne spent almost two decades in the local hotel industry, most recently as General Manager at aloft Chapel Hill, and officially starts on November 11. Sherburne successfully opened two new hotels in his most recent GM roles at aloft Chapel Hill (July 2010-October 2013) and Four Points by Sheraton RDU (June 2009-July 2010). He also helped the properties garner an array of accolades: 2011 Hotel of the Year (No. 2 in 2012) by Starwood Hotels & Resorts for all aloft Hotels in North America; 2011 New Hotel of the Year by Interstate Hotels Crossroads Division; 2011/12/13 Certificate of Excellence by Trip Advisor; and Top 10 percent of all Starwood North American Four Points properties.

Peter Grills has been promoted to General Manager at The Ballantyne Hotel & Lodge, a Luxury Collection Hotel

Prior to being named general manager, Grills served as hotel manager at The Ballantyne Hotel & Lodge. In this position, he was responsible for all room and food and beverage operations, including guest reception, housekeeping, Gallery Restaurant, as well as the other culinary outlets, including kitchen, banquets and in-room dining. He joined The Ballantyne Hotel & Lodge as director of food & beverage.

Jack Schmidt has been appointed as General Manager at The Carolina Inn

Joe Crimmins, Vice President and Managing Director of Destination Hotels & Resorts (DH&R), today announced that Jack Schmidt has been appointed to General Manager at The Carolina Inn. Since February 2011, Schmidt was the historic hotel’s Regional Director of Sales and Marketing and also worked in concert with Rizzo Conference Center. Schmidt secures his first general manager position following more than 30 years of hotel sales and marketing experience. Prior to joining The Carolina Inn team, he was Regional Vice President of Sales and Marketing for DH&R’s Northwest properties from 2006-2011 that included the Suncadia Resort near Seattle, Wash., and Skamania Lodge near Portland, Ore., where he oversaw their sales and marketing efforts. Before DH&R, Schmidt was the Chief Marketing Officer for Benchmark Hospitality International responsible for the entire company’s direct sales and marketing efforts. He oversaw the company’s enterprise sales and marketing system, all revenue management functions, global distribution, advertising and promotions, public relations, interactive marketing, and customer relationship management programs.

Carver Hopper has been appointed as Director of Operations at LeGrand Center

Born and raised in Shelby, NC, Carver has had 17 years of honing his commitment to customer service in the region, starting in the food and beverage segment and for the past six years as Guest Services/Housekeeping Manager at Hampton Inn Charlotte-Gastonia where he managed numerous departments. Carver was recognized by Hilton Hotels for ensuring consistency in daily operations and Hilton standards and for implementing procedures that improved guest service scores to its highest rating of “Outstanding.”

Emily McGeorge has been appointed as Conference Planning Manager at Gastonia Conference Center

Fred Julius, Chief Operating Officer for The Wilderman Group announced the appointment of Emily McGeorge of Gastonia, NC as Conference Planning Manager at the multi-use 30,000-square-foot in Gastonia, NC. A native of Gastonia, Emily received her B.S. in Hospitality Management from Western Carolina University and served an internship with Aramark Campus Services at Western Carolina University. She has also held positions as Catering Director with Aramark at Coastal Carolina University and has ten years of experience in hospitality with a concentration on event management and marketing coordination, and has designed and executed corporate social events of all sizes. Emily is an active member of the Junior League of Gaston County, and is a local volunteer at the Loray Girls Home, Taste of Gaston, the Gaston Memorial Hospital and the Gastonia Downtown Development Corporation. She is a member of the York Chester Neighborhood Association and The United Way.

Steven M. Janoski has been appointed as General Manager at Fairfield Inn and Suites Wilmington/Wrightsville Beach

Brent R. Gresham has been appointed as General Manager at The French Quarter Inn

A native of South Carolina, growing up near Charleston, Mr. Gresham graduated among the top of his class from the School of Hotel, Restaurant and Tourism Management at the University of South Carolina and is also a graduate of the world-renowned Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne in Switzerland. As General Manager of the French Quarter Inn, Mr. Gresham will focus on the continuation of enhancing the guest experience at the AAA Four-Diamond Inn. The Inn skillfully marries the pleasures of a stay in an old-world elegance of a Parisian chateau while experiencing the admired southern comforts of one of the country’s most service-minded hotels and dining destinations.

Carl Anthony (Tony) Swainey has been named Vice President and General Manager at the Gastonia Conference Center

In his role as General Manager, Mr. Swainey will introduce Gastonia Conference Center to the community and the region for weddings, meetings and special events. In addition, he will manage the day-to-day operations of the facility to achieve the established financial targets for the center and will be responsible for preparing budgets, marketing strategies and managing expectations for the new multi-use facility. His responsibilities will also include environmental stewardship of the property’s innovative sustainable hospitality programs.

Jack Schmidt joins The Carolina Inn with over 25 years of sales and marketing experience. His most recent role was Regional Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Destination Hotels & Resort’s northwest properties that include the Suncadia Resort near Seattle, Washington and Skamania Lodge near Portland, Oregon where he oversaw their sales and marketing efforts. He also worked with the Destination team at Sunriver Resort to identify synergistic opportunities between the three properties. Prior to joining Destination Hotels & Resorts, Mr. Schmidt was the Chief Marketing Officer for Benchmark Hospitality International responsible for the entire company’s direct sales and marketing efforts. He oversaw the company’s enterprise sales and marketing system, the national database of meeting planners, all revenue management functions, global distribution, advertising and promotion, the company’s national awareness campaign, interactive marketing, customer relationship management programs, as well as sales training and compensation programming. Mr. Schmidt studied hospitality management at Widener University in Delaware and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He has been an adjunct professor teaching hospitality sales and marketing and co-authored the original sales training materials for the International Association of Conference Centers. Mr. Schmidt also has served on the International Association of Conference Centers board of directors for three terms, and is a past chairman of the America’s board of directors for the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International.

Stephen Valliere has been named Corporate Sales Manager at the Renaissance Asheville

Valliere is a member of the Meeting Professionals International – Carolinas Chapter, North Carolina Business Travelers Association and Charlotte Young Professionals. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Hotel & Tourism Management from Johnson & Wales University. He was honored with the 2009 the Johnson & Wales Hospitality College – Academic Performance Award and was a 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 recipient of the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Foundation – Ecolab Scholarship. Charlotte Trip Magazine named him June 2007 Employee of the Month and he is among the Who’s Who Among Outstanding Professionals.

Charlie Kingston has been appointed as General Manager at the Omni Charlotte Hotel

Kingston brings with him more than 15 years of hospitality industry experience, most recently as the Director of Food & Beverage for the Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate. At the property he oversaw seven food and beverage outlets and 70,000 square feet of meeting space. His background also includes positions at Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin and the Peabody Hotel in Orlando, Fla. Kingston earned a Bachelor of Arts from St. Michael’s College in Winooski, Vt. He is a Certified Sommelier by the Court of Master Sommeliers and has a Six Sigma Green Belt Certification. He was awarded the Ideal Director of Operations in 2009 by the luxury hotel brand for his achievements at the Omni Orlando Resort at ChampionsGate.

Adriaan Radder has been appointed as General Manager at The Ballantyne Hotel & Lodge

Radder has a wealth of experience working for global luxury brands including Marriott and Ritz-Carlton. Radder will oversee operations of The Ballantyne Hotel & Lodge, which is part of Starwood’s The Luxury Collection brand; he will start on May 10. Most recently, Radder was Senior Vice President with Kerzner International and General Manager of One&Only Ocean Club, a top tier resort in the Bahamas. Prior to joining One&Only Ocean Club, Radder served as Vice President and Area General Manager for The Ritz-Carlton Hotels of Washington D.C. In this role, he oversaw four properties and achieved significant improvements in profitability as well as guest and employee satisfaction ratings. Before that, Radder worked as General Manager of The Ritz Carlton, Pentagon City. Under Radder’s leadership, the hotel became one of the brand’s top performing hotels. Radder also worked for Marriott International where he held General Manager positions at several properties, including The Jeddah Marriott Hotel, Saudi Arabia, The Amsterdam Marriott Hotel, The Netherlands and The Tyson’s Corner Marriott, Vienna, VA. Radder is a recipient of Marriott’s “General Manager of the Year” Award, both at the franchise and international levels. In addition, Radder was honored twice with Marriott’s Outstanding Owner Relations Awards. Originally from Holland, Radder studied at the Hogere Hotel School in Maastricht, The Netherlands before relocating to the United States where he earned both his Bachelor’s and Master's degrees in International Hospitality Management from Florida International University.

Kris Horacek has been appointed as General Manager at Charlotte Marriott SouthPark and Charlotte Renaissance SouthPark

Ms. Horacek’s path to the hospitality industry was not a clear-cut one. Hailing from a family who was firmly entrenched in the medical field, she originally wanted to be a doctor. But she somehow found herself managing office buildings and shopping malls and before she knew it, she was giving a real estate class and met some guys from Marriott, and the rest, as they say, is history. She began her career in the hospitality industry 21 years ago as a Director of Sales for two Residence Inns in Omaha, Nebraska and within six months, was a dual general manager for the same two Residence Inns in the city. She later became the Senior Project Facilitator for the Lynx Project, an efficiency project for Marriott’s select service brands across the country, then the Regional Director for Marriott’s Extended Stay brands in New England. Kris was then promoted to Vice President, Extended Stay Lodging in 2000 and then in 2002 promoted to Vice President Market Strategy where she was responsible for pricing strategy in the Northeast Region for Marriott. In May of 2007, Kris became the General Manager of the Renaissance Charlotte SouthPark where she was responsible for converting and opening a former Hyatt Hotel in suburban Charlotte. In July of 2009, she was given the added responsibilities of managing the Charlotte Marriott SouthPark.
