Buenos Aires has become the latest city to join the International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories (INSTO), a pioneering initiative of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) aimed at helping destinations manage tourism in a smart and sustainable manner.
The new Observatory is located in the city of La Antigua Guatemala, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a leading tourism destination. Led by the Instituto Guatemalteco de Turismo (INGUAT) and supported by the Guatemalan government, the Observatory will periodically collect data and scientific evidence as it monitors the effect tourism has on the historic city. This data will then be used to assess how tourism can best be used to help drive sustainable growth and development.

An island paradise is the last place one thinks there would be concern over the environment and the economy, after all you're there to get away from it all. But, on the island of Bonaire in the Western Caribbean, that couldn't be farther from the truth. Researchers from University of Central Florida (UCF) Rosen College of Hospitality Management worked with the island's government on the creation of a Strategic Tourism Masterplan. On May 30, 2018, Bonaire's Parliament adopted the Masterplan establishing Bonaire as a "Blue Destination", the first in the Caribbean. This means the island focuses on "green efforts" such as ecotourism, renewable energy, conservation of the ocean through waste management and the banning of some forms of sunscreen whose chemical makeup, Oxybenzone and Octinoxate, can kill some sea life, damage coral and disrupt the normal ecosystem in the ocean.
UNWTO welcomes the agreement reached by the Sustainable Tourism Observatory of Guanajuato (Mexico) and Paraguay to facilitate knowledge and technology transfer. Guanajuato is one of the 16 Observations in the UNWTO Network.
