Spa Benchmarking Tool Now Available from the International SPA Association

The International SPA Association (ISPA) and Smith Travel Research (STR) are pleased to announce that the Spa STAR report, a benchmarking tool for all types of spas, is now available. The report will aid spas in making well-informed and more profitable operating decisions. The online Spa STAR report allows spas to enter in data in three main categories: treatments (such as massages and facials), salon (such as manicure, pedicure and hair) and retail.

W Hotels Worldwide Introduces W Retreat & Spa - Vieques Island, a New Way to Escape

W Hotels Worldwide, the hotel category buster and industry innovator, has unveiled W Retreat & Spa - Vieques Island, the W brand’s 37th hotel globally and its first retreat within North America. Owned by REIG CAPITAL, through its affiliate Vieques Hotel Partners, W Vieques is located only eight miles off the southeast coast of Puerto Rico and opens as the second W Retreat in the world, following the successful opening of W Retreat & Spa – Maldives in 2006. As W Hotels continues its transformation into a global powerhouse, on track to expand its portfolio to more than 50 hotels by the end of 2011, W is slated to open nine new hotels this year, including two retreat properties in Bali and Koh Samui, Thailand.

Six Senses Salt Cay to be developed in Turks and Caicos

Six Senses Resorts & Spas is set to establish its first Caribbean property in the Turks & Caicos, following the signing of an agreement with Salt Cay Devco Ltd. In the initial phase, the project will comprise a Six Senses resort, Residential Villas, Six Senses Spa, and Golf Course. The proposed opening date is 2013.

Intelligent Spas Publishes Updated Research on South Africa

Intelligent Spas’ second Spa Benchmark Report on the South African spa market presents an extensive collection of financial statistics including breakdowns of key performance indicators by day spas, hotel spas and resort spas. The new research found over 200 spas are operating in South Africa and generated revenue of ZAR380 million (approximately USD47 million) in 2008, representing a 2% decrease compared to 2007.

W Hotels Bliss Spa Goes Global

After sloughing, scrubbing and smoothing skin in the U.S. and U.K., Bliss spa is going global, stretching its beauty footprint in new W Hotels from Hong Kong to Doha, Barcelona to Dubai, and beyond. In addition to recent domestic openings in Atlanta, Scottsdale, and Hoboken, New Jersey, Bliss debuted in Asia last year with the opening of Bliss spa at W Hong Kong, and quickly massaged its way to the top by winning Time Out Hong Kong’s “Best Spa” award. Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. and Spatality Holdings, Ltd. announced today that they have entered into a multi-year agreement under which Nectar Spa LLC and its affiliates will make the upscale Nectar Spa brand available at Sheraton properties worldwide beginning in 2009. The new spa experience is part of a brand-wide effort to enhance the iconic Sheraton brand, which includes an investment of over $4 billion in new hotels, upgrading 100 hotels in the U.S. – nearly half its North American portfolio – renovating 50,000 guestrooms and re-designing more than 100 new lobbies.
