Traditional B&B Bookings Are Up Triple Digits This Summer - Here's Where And When To Book Them

Bed and breakfasts may seem like something of the past, but according to Travelocity, this old school accommodation is seeing a significant uptick this summer. New booking data from the travel site shows room nights at B&Bs have grown 25 percent year-over-year1 both domestically and internationally, and some major cities are seeing increased demand of 100 percent or more, including popular destinations like Los Angeles(100%), San Francisco (125%), Chicago (149%), Detroit (145%) and Charlotte (149%).

European Business Travellers Prefer Online Travel Agencies

Fresh research from SAP Concur and Global Business Travel Association (GBTA) shows that, nowadays, business travellers are less likely to book flights and accommodation directly from suppliers. In other words, online travel agency (OTA) bookings have now surpassed direct bookings to become the more popular option, particularly for those travelling for business. In this study, 1,252 business travellers, hailing from an assortment of European countries like the UK, Belgium, Germany, France and various Nordic countries, who travelled for business at least once in the last year were polled. The figures show the number of European business travellers booking flights directly with their preferred airline drop from 79% in 2017 to 68% this year. In the same time period, direct hotel bookings dropped 13%, from 83% to 70%.

One Year after Introduction of Stricter Hotel Cancellation Rules: Business Travelers Are Not Adjusting Booking Behavior; Companies Challenged to Minimize Incremental Fees

A year after several global chains introduced new cancellation fees, the hotel booking behavior of travelers in global corporations is largely unaffected. Analysis of corporate bookings by HRS, the leading global hotel solutions provider, found that the relative number of cancellations increased by nearly one (0.9) percent. And the associated additional costs for companies are considerable: the tightened conditions led to corporations absorbing higher hotel costs - on average 3.8 percent of their total hotel spend.

Plan Ahead to Book Hotel Rooms Last-Minute

The best-laid plans – is there even such a thing when it comes to business travel? Last minute travel is not only unavoidable but inevitable. It is often out of your control – meetings change; flights are delayed or canceled; clients need you. According to a SAP Concur report released last year, these eleventh-hour bookings can cost you more for flights, but last-minute hotel bookings buck this trend. Looking at booking windows of 0 days, 0–3 days, 4–7 days, 8–14 days, 15–30 days, and 30+ days, SAP Concur's 2017 hotel data for EMEA shows that the lowest median rates can be found 0–3 days out, but most rooms are booked 15–30 and 30+ days out. Quite simply, travellers are losing money by booking earlier than when prices are at their lowest.
