The Canadian hotel industry reported mixed results in the three key performance metrics for the week of 8-13 August 2011, according to data from STR. In year-over-year measurements, the Canadian hotel industry ended the week virtually flat in occupancy with a 0.1-percent decrease to 76.1 percent, average daily rate rose 0.5 percent to CAD$131.24 and revenue per available room ended the week virtually flat with a 0.5-percent increase to CAD$99.87.

WDM-Consultants is in the process of developing an international competency standard (ICS) for Food and Beverage Management for the Canadian Tourism Human Resource Council (CTHRC). The overall objective is to set an international competency standard defined by key stakeholders from several participating countries. The work involves a comprehensive review of exemplary standards for Food and Beverage Management, and the integration of the content identified into an international standard. The application of International Competency Standard (ICS) for training and certification can improve learners and workers’ global mobility and ultimately, contribute to ease chronic skill shortages.

The goal of the study is to review total rewards and provide benchmarking and best-practice analysis for executive compensation trends and practices at Canadian hotels of all sizes and segments. It will report on critical items such as compensation statistics (annual compensation, value of long-term incentives), retirement contributions and other compensation trends.

The Canadian hotel development pipeline comprises 191 projects totaling 21,353 rooms, according to the June 2011 STR/McGraw Hill Construction Dodge Pipeline Report. This represents a 4.1-percent decrease in the number of rooms in the total active pipeline compared to June 2010.
