The massive influx of Chinese tourists to Africa has in the recent years made a buzz, and it is for all possible reasons. After seven consecutive years of annual double-digit growth in spending, China continues to lead global outbound travel, reaching US$ 261 billion of Chinese travelers' expenditure in 2016, a 12% growth since 2012. Approximately 135 million Chinese outbound tourists travelled in 2016, out of which 10% were bound for Africa up from 3% in 2008.

Chinese tourists travel all over the world in massive numbers. In the first half of 2017, they were ranked number one for most outbound trips, with 62 million trips. This was reported by the China National Tourism Administration and it is one of the reasons, why so many countries are fighting for recognition by the Chinese. Southeast Asian countries are also looking to attract Chinese tourists. In 2016, more than 30 million trips were made between China and Southeast Asian countries. During this year’s National Day holiday, approximately 700 million trips were made. According to the China Tourism Academy, Southeast Asian countries were top destinations during the holiday.

STR's September 2017 Pipeline Report shows 625,359 rooms in 2,842 hotel projects Under Contract in the Asia Pacific region. The total represents a 7.4% increase in rooms Under Contract compared with September 2016. Under Contract data includes projects in the In Construction, Final Planning and Planning stages but does not include projects in the Unconfirmed stage. The Asia Pacific region reported 288,850 rooms in 1,241 projects In Construction for the month. Based on number of rooms, that is a 20.9% increase in year-over-year comparisons. Among Chain Scale segments, the Upscale segment accounted for the largest portion of rooms Under Contract (26.5% with 165,532 rooms) and In Construction (26.4% with 76,223 rooms).

Although the Chinese government has put pressure on China's big airlines to drive more direct bookings, pushing back against the tide will be a mammoth task as EyeforTravel's research finds that the sector has an Online Travel Agency (OTA) penetration of 77.5% for website bookings and 81.2% for bookings made through an app. In contrast, 17.6% of website users reported to EyeforTravel that they booked direct and a slightly lower 12.9% also went direct through an airline app.

During the next four days, the priorities of the Organization for 2018-2019, the transformation of the UNWTO Code of Ethics for Tourism into an International Convention and the impact of technology on tourism will centre the discussions. On the agenda of the Assembly is also the election of the Secretary General for the next four years.
