Born and raised in Amritsar, India, Sunil was certain of his career in hospitality from a young age. Right after finishing secondary school back home, he packed his bags to move to Switzerland to attend the prestigious Hotel Management School at Les Roches for his Bachelor's degree. Fluent in English, Hindi, Punjabi and with fair knowledge of German, he continued to work on his French with a brief assignment at the Hotel Eden Palace au Lac in Montreux before leaving lake and mountains to join Four Seasons across the pond in 1996.

Jeremy spent over a decade with Peninsula Hotels as Director of Marketing at the Peninsula Beijing and the Peninsula New York and almost a decade with Starwood Group – with postings in Sydney, Bali and Thailand in a variety of sales positions. His past positions also include being the Director of Marketing at the Shangri-la China World Hotel in Beijing; VP, Sales & Marketing for COMO Hotels & Resorts and Director of Sales, Europe for Sandals & Beaches Resorts. Early in his hospitality career, he spent two years in the cruise industry with Kloster Cruise Line as National Sales Manager in the UK. Jeremy first began interested in the hotel industry while travelling, as a teenager, with his father who was in the textile industry.
Sebastian Gassen, originally from Germany, recently joined InterContinental Hong Kong from the Mandarin Oriental Jakarta, where he headed food & beverage operations for two years. Sebastian brings over 16 years of experience in a variety of luxury hotels in Europe and Asia. A veteran of Ritz Carlton Hotels, he spent two years as Director of F&B at The Ritz-Carlton in Vienna, Austria, where he was on the pre-opening team. He has also worked at The Ritz-Carlton, Beijing Financial Street; The Ritz-Carlton Berlin and The Ritz-Carlton, Wolfsburg, Germany. During this time he also participated on the Task Force for the opening of The Ritz-Carlton, Moscow; The Ritz-Carlton, Shanghai Pudong; The Ritz-Carlton, Hong Kong and the Istanbul Edition. His experience also includes postings at The Charles Hotel, Munich (a Rocco Forte Collection property) and the Madinat, Jumeirah, Mina A’Salam Hotel in Dubai where he gained experience in all aspects of F&B operations. He is joined in Hong Kong by his wife and his two young children.
An incredible act of salvation has taken place in China. Historic trees and traditional Chinese constructions were in jeopardy of being erased before Chinese businessman Ma Dadong decided to uproot both the trees and buildings and move them to just outside the prominent city of Shanghai. Dadong has managed to preserve nearly 80% of 10,000 trees that were in danger of being felled to make way for a new reservoir, along with 50 Ming and Qing dynasty houses spread over 30 ancient villages 800km from Shanghai. He has spent over 10 years on this amazing conservation project, and now the salvaged pieces of history will be reimagined to form a new, exclusive resort, the AmanYangyun.

As more and more Chinese tourists go abroad on holiday, China's budget hotel chains are expanding overseas to serve the country's growing numbers of international travelers. According to a recent article in the Financial Times, low-cost hotels such as 7Days Inn and GreenTree Inn have already opened hotels in Austria, the U.S., Thailand and Vietnam, and are looking to expand further in Germany and Italy, following Anbang's purchase of the high-end Waldorf Astoria in New York for nearly $2 billion in 2014.

Hotels in China have "little negotiating power" with online travel agents (OTAs) and could do more to resist their increasingly dominant role, suggest MSc student Lorraine Zhang, Associate Professor Basak Denizci Guillet and Assistant Professor Deniz Kukukusta of the School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in a recently published research paper. Yet this should not suggest that hotels can do away with "maintaining a healthy relationship with this important distribution channel", the researchers warn. In a wide-ranging study the researchers also find that the competition between OTAs is even more intense than it is between OTAs and hotels, and is likely to intensify further with the entry of new companies into the market.

Banyan Tree Holdings Limited (Banyan Tree) and China Vanke Co., Ltd (Vanke) have agreed to create Banyan Tree China (BTC), a new joint venture between Banyan Tree and Vanke, to consolidate the ownership of Banyan Tree-branded hotels and assets in China. The amount of initial paid-up capital of BTC is estimated to be no more than RMB2,000 million. BTC will also be the development and management platform for new projects by both parties in hospitality, senior-living and wellness.

Grand Hyatt Hong Kong has appointed Richard Greaves as general manager, effective 1 March. Greaves is a Hyatt veteran, having started his career as a management trainee at Hyatt Carlton Tower in 1984. He is currently general manager of Grand Hyatt Shanghai and area VP for the Shanghai region. His first encounter with Grand Hyatt Hong Kong was in 1996 when he was executive assistant manager – food and beverage.
