An Exclusive Look At Airbnb's First Foray Into Urban Planning | fastcompany.com

Airbnb announces a brand-new innovation lab called Samara, whose first project is a novel community center in Japan. Two years ago, the founders of Airbnb were asking themselves what the company could become, now that its vision of becoming the world's largest home-share community had come true beyond their wildest expectations. That’s when they happened across a list of the top 10 tech companies of the 1990s. They were stunned—and scared. Nine of those once-hot companies were now floundering or dead, and they had all done everything right. But by simply focusing on their core businesses, each of those startups had allowed competitors to copy them. Brian Chesky, Joe Gebbia, and Nathan Blecharczyk realized that if they weren’t thinking of what else their business might become, Airbnb would eventually become a dowdy has-been.

Container Hotel and Prefab Bungalow: Modular Building Construction in China

With a fast changing economic environment and society coming to terms with the 'new normal' in China, hotel developers are seeking for more carefully planned and executed projects, based on a sound economic footing to ensure sustainable operations. Under such circumstances the modular building system might become one possible remedy to bring momentum to hotel development in China, particularly in remote areas. This publication provides a brief introduction of China's modular building construction for the hotel industry. Why modular building? Modular building is a process in which a building is constructed off-site, under controlled conditions in a factory, delivering the consistent quality designed to the same codes and standards as conventionally built hotel units. The controlled environemnt and 'massproduction' allows for a significantly expedited construction timeline, saving as much as half the construction time. Companies like CIMC-MBS and Deepblue Smart House are the trailbalzers for modular construction in China and has provided numerous modular building solutions for different projects around the world, including residences, student accommodation, camp accommodation, hotels, beach houses, overwater bungalow etc.

Capsule hotels may stack up in Hong Kong | msnbc.msn.com

Forget bunk beds. In Hong Kong, capsule hotels just might be the next big thing for budget travelers. Hoping to capitalize on what seems like an ideal conundrum — a dense metropolis where both occupancy rates and per-night prices are high and centrally located land to develop new hotels is scarce — Galaxy Stars Limited, a local company, has started offering pod-beds for sale.

Boutique hotels in China: The second-tier rush is on‎ | cnngo.com

No one needs reminding of just how keen Chinese consumers are on branded goods. Hong Kong’s Louis Vuitton stores seem perennially beset by queues of mainland Chinese tourists and super cars parade the streets of second-tier Chinese cities. But this obsession with brand names also extends to travel. According to a survey released last month by leading publishing group Hurun Report, 64 percent of the 463 Chinese millionaires and billionaires interviewed admitted that ‘brand’ was an overriding factor when it comes to choosing hotels.

Singapore exhibit is also a hotel room | bangkokpost.com

The temporary hotel isn't like any other hotel in the world, with only one luxurious suite and the magnificent Merlion statue watching over its well-off guest. Fortunately, an overnight stay doesn't include a wake-up splash, as the Merlion won't be spouting water over you. This may seem like a reinvention of Singapore's iconic landmark but take a closer look _ it's inspiring art created by Tatzu Nishi, who's known for his amazing series of hotels rooms built around public monuments. For this new piece, the Japanese artist also designed the red wallpaper to go along with the red carpet and furniture.

Hotel Review: 3+1 Bedrooms, Beijing | nytimes.com

With its cool, white interiors and raw concrete finishes, Beijing’s new 3+1 Bedrooms is as minimal as its name. Hidden behind a sliding steel door on a quiet hutong, or traditional alleyway, this stylish little hotel has only three rooms and one suite. Too intimate to be pretentious, it has all the amenities (well, almost all) of a larger boutique property — minus, of course, the scene. Still, if it’s the latter you’re looking for, you won’t have to go far. The hotel comes from Cho, as he’s known, a Beijing night-life whiz whose popular Bed Bar is just a few doors down; his Café Sambal and Paper restaurants are also nearby.
