PARSIPPANY, N.J. - Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, the world's largest hotel franchising company with approximately 9,300 hotels across 90 countries, today announced the continued expansion of its portfolio in Japan, converting two hotels to its Wyndham Grand® and Wyndham Garden® brands: the 60-room, all suite, Wyndham Grand Awashima and 95-room, all suite, Wyndham Garden Nagaizumi.

Analysts at Lodging Econometrics (LE) report that despite the COVID-19 outbreak, China's total construction pipeline continues to expand to an all-time high of 3,533 projects/645,764 rooms, up 24% by projects and 9% by rooms year-over-year (YOY). China has 2,330 projects/412,142 rooms presently under construction. Projects under construction remain near record-highs at the end of the first quarter even though many projects are delayed two to four months. Projects scheduled to start construction in the next 12 months experienced an enormous increase of 92% by projects and 45% by rooms YOY, to stand at a record-high 744 projects/120,458 rooms.
Vietnam's tourism industry is set to lead Asia's return to business as social distancing restrictions are lifted and domestic travel is set to return. The Vietnamese government announced the lifting of social distancing restrictions on April 24 setting the stage for the return of a domestic market of up to 70 million travellers per year that has been growing at a rate of 20% for the past five years. Speaking on The Future of Travel podcast by Bangkok-based branding agency QUO, Wink Hotels CEO Michael Piro said that the speed at which Vietnam reacted to Covid-19 revealed an underlying strength and resilience that is now setting the country on the road to recovery. "Vietnam is no stranger to crisis and the government was very quick to respond," said Piro. "You can feel the authority, leadership and control. They were very thorough using every channel possible to get the Covid message out and this inspired a sense of social responsibility and togetherness across the country." Now with social distancing measures lifted, restaurants filling up again and airlines such as Vietjet running six daily return flights between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City as of April 23, the demand for domestic travel particularly by a young, entrepreneurial population, with two-thirds 70 aged below 35 years old, is apparent.
Centara Hotels & Resorts, Thailand's leading hotel operator, is further expanding its presence in Vietnam, following the signing of Hotel Management Agreements (HMAs) for two large-scale resorts being developed by Novaland Group, a leading Vietnamese property and real estate developer. The HMAs cover Centara's appointment to manage a total of 2,260 keys across the two resorts, both now under construction in two distinct and renowned destinations and due to open in 2022 and 2023.

The coronavirus outbreak in 2020 has been a severe challenge for the hotel industry in China, putting the risk management capability of each operating hotel to the test. While from the perspective of hotel investment and asset management, which are more strategic and forward-thinking than day-to-day operation, the industry will recover from the downturn eventually, the impact of this outbreak will force investors to reconsider their strategic planning in hotel investment and in asset management.
Analysts at Lodging Econometrics (LE) report that China's total construction pipeline boomed in the fourth quarter of 2019 and closed the quarter at 3,526 projects/643,435 rooms, up 28% by projects and 11% by rooms year-over-year (YOY). At the end of 2019, both projects and rooms in the construction pipeline are at new all-time highs. China has the second largest pipeline in the world.

Projects in the early planning stage have 428 projects/105,149 rooms.
Marriott International, Inc. (NASDAQ: MAR) today announced it has signed agreements with Asset World Corporation (AWC), Thailand's leading integrated lifestyle real-estate group, to introduce three of its global hospitality brands to Thailand. The agreement would fuel the company's expansion in Thailand with the addition of three hotels comprised of nearly 1,550 rooms expected to open between late 2020 and 2024. Under the agreements, AWC is expected to open a 248-room Courtyard by Marriott in late 2020 in Phuket, as well as a 900-room Marriott Marquis hotel and a 398-room JW Marriott hotel both in Pattaya.
