At the first Cornell International Hospitality Summit (CIHS), industry leaders and academics will examine the future of the hospitality industry in India. The summit, which will be held Tuesday, January 17, 2012, in Mumbai, India will be co-presented by the school’s Center for Hospitality Research (CHR). This week, the nearly 2,000 faculty and students starting classes at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University's School of Hotel & Tourism Management (SHTM), are getting a whole new $100 million "lab" to play in. For the first time, courses have been redesigned to incorporate the school's brand-new Hotel ICON into students' learning experience. General Manager Richard Hatter explained that they didn't want to throw the usual lavish hotel grand opening party. Instead, in keeping with the mission of the hotel as an integral part of hospitality teaching and research, the ICON is celebrating with a Hospitality Design Conference on the 21st of this month.
If India’s domestic hotel industry adds the expected 10,000 plus room capacity in the next two to three years, it may face a severe shortage of skilled manpower. As compared with a potential demand of 60,000-70,000 skilled individuals in the next two to three years, only 15,000 hotel management graduates are expected to be available, said Manish Khanna, managing director and chief executive officer of UEI Global, a unit of Berggruen Holdings, USA. Hotel industry officials believe the situation will worsen, if not improve in the near future.
Hilton Worldwide today announced the appointment of Edmond Ip as Chairman, Greater China. In this new role, Edmond will act as an adviser to Hilton Worldwide, primarily overseeing all of the company’s operational interests in Greater China, including implementing a new organizational structure, assisting in recruiting best-in-class talent, and aggregating the growth from the numerous hotel openings in the next few years. Ip will be based between Singapore and Shanghai.
As the first international hotel group that entered China 27 years ago, IHG is now China's largest and fastest growing international hotel company. With 150 hotels currently open, IHG is also China's biggest employer in the hotel industry with 52,000 employees. IHG plans double its presence with opening of another 150 hotels which require an additional 90,000 employees in the next five years.
The School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has strengthened its efforts in nurturing hospitality graduates to address the growing demands of the hospitality and tourism industry in Hong Kong and the region.
