Americans Catch Spring Travel Fever | TIA Reports

Washington, DC -- According to the Travel Industry Association of America's (TIA) Spring 2005 Travel Forecast, Americans plan on taking nearly 281 million person-trips during March, April and May. This represents an increase of 1.2 percent over spring 2004. Recent increases in both hotel and airline travel support TIA's forecast for strong spring travel volume. A person-trip is one person on one trip traveling 50 miles or more from home, one way.

PricewaterhouseCoopers Forecasts Manhattan Occupancy and Average Daily Room Rate to Exceed Year-2000 Peak Levels in 2005

NEW YORK, According to the PricewaterhouseCoopers Hospitality & Leisure practice, strong local economic growth combined with an increase in business travel and international arrivals will lead to the continuation of robust revenue per available room (RevPAR) growth for Manhattan hotels in 2005 and 2006. In 2004, Manhattan hotel occupancy increased by 7.3 occupancy points to 83.2 percent and average daily room rate (ADR) increased by 10.8% to $201.76, leading to RevPAR growth of 22.0 percent, compared to prior-year levels, according to Smith Travel Research.

It can go without saying that the 26th of December, 2004 will be remembered as a tragic day in the history of the world: a day on which a catastrophic event caused by a powerful tsunami changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of people in twelve countries. The tsunami catastrophe has been perhaps the most talked about tragedy since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Besides loss and destruction of human lives, which has been immeasurable, the Indian Ocean tsunami has also had a considerable impact on the economy of the countries that it hit; countries that rely on tourism as a large source of their income and employment.

German, European Online Travel Markets See Strong Growth, According to New PhoCusWright Report

Sherman, CT, USA | The German online travel market has multiplied in the past two years, outpacing the rest of Europe, according to a new report published by PhoCusWright Inc. titled European Online Travel Marketplace Update 2002-2006: Focus on Germany. After more than doubling in 2003, online travel bookings in Germany grew by an estimated 62% in 2004, reaching a projected €3.3 billion. The report covers leisure and unmanaged business travel gross bookings in both Germany and the European Union (original members).

TIA's Traveler Sentiment Index Falls Moderately In Fourth Quarter 2004

WASHINGTON, DC -- The Travel Industry Association of America's (TIA) quarterly Traveler Sentiment Index showed a moderate decline in fourth quarter 2004, falling 3.2 percent to 95.8 from third quarter 2004. The decline is due to negative consumer perceptions in four of the five components of the overall index. Consumers were most concerned about their ability to take a pleasure trip based on their personal finances and available free time. They were also slightly less interested in taking pleasure trips and were somewhat negative about the affordability of pleasure travel compared to third quarter 2004. The only index remaining unchanged was traveler perceptions of service received while traveling. The survey was conducted October 14 - 24, 2004.

Three nights before Christmas the Monegasque air was rent with the sound of the premature tearing of wrapping paper. The present beneath was the 619-room Monte Carlo Grand Hotel and the eager fingers those belonging to the hotel's new owners: a joint venture of Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, Kingdom Hotels International and Bank of Scotland Corporate (BoS). The trio have a potential US$1.5 billion at their disposal to make similar purchases in the European luxury sector, with BoS providing 50% of the equity funding and all of the debt funding. The joint venture's first purchase will be known as The Fairmont Monte Carlo from March and can expect to enjoy refurbishment work costing US$50 million. The hotel will be managed by Fairmont, as will any others purchased.

After a drop recorded in 2003, rooms revenue of French chains rose by 4% in 2004 | MKG Reports

The year 2003 was delicate for the French hotel industry. To the drop in international customers observed since 2001 was added a degradation in the national economy, leading to a pronounced drop in RevPAR by 2.4% in total, though moreover by 12.7% in the 4* category. 2004 ended on a rise that equalled the loss of the previous year: +2.3% for RevPAR in all categories combined.

Tsunami Wave - An Economic Tourist Disaster

Since the beginning of this decade tourism in Asia has been a victim of some disaster or the other. First came the indirect effects of September 11 2001, followed by severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and the Bali bombing attacks in 2003 and now, the tsunami tragedy of December 26, which has dealt a huge blow to the affected countries in terms of the sheer volume of loss: human, marine and economic. Last month’s catastrophe has been almost mind-numbing. More than 160,000 persons have perished and nearly 5 million persons have been left homeless. The World Health Organization fears that another 50,000 further would perhaps die due to inadequate relief or diseases such as diarrhea or viral fever. It may be worthwhile to briefly review these events from the hospitality industry’s viewpoint, and determine how we should respond to the most recent crisis.

As the death toll in the aftermath of the tragic earthquake continues to rise, another disaster unfolds in the form of lost tourism business which, for countries such as Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia, drives anywhere from 6% to 20% of the local economy.

Is It Time To Break Out The Name Badges?

During the recent industry recession, convention hotels have suffered more than any other property type covered in PKF Consulting’s Trends in the Hotel Industry reports. The typical convention hotel showed a staggering 40 percent decline in profits during the past three years. From 2000 to 2003, convention hotel revenue has declined 17.4 percent, the result of 9.8 percent declines in both occupancy and average daily room rate. Compounding the negative effects of the decline in revenue were the relatively minimal cuts in operating expenses. Given the large complexity, size, and labor requirements of convention hotels, management at these behemoths were only able to cut their operating costs by 5.2 percent in response to the declining revenues. The net result was that 40.0 percent profit drop.

Americans Warm Up To The Idea Of Winter Travel | TIA Reports

WASHINGTON, DC -- Whether they'll be frolicking in the snow or sunning on the beach, Americans will be traveling in record numbers this winter (December, January, February), according to the latest seasonal forecast by the Travel Industry Association of America (TIA). Americans are expected to take more than 243 million person-trips this winter, an increase of 2.6 percent from last winter. In just four years, since 2000, winter travel volume has increased nearly 8 percent. A person-trip is one person traveling 50 miles or more from home, one way or an overnight trip away from home staying in paid accommodations.

From 2000 to 2003, the average U.S. hotel struggled with a 15 percent decline in revenue. Since rooms revenue represents 68 percent of the total revenue at a typical hotel, the extraordinary declines in rooms occupied and ADR were certainly the major contributors to the fall-off in total revenue.

Vietnam, a country rich in cultural heritage and history continues to lure tourists from all corners of the globe. The country's stable political and economic conditions, combined with a number of government initiatives are making the country an attractive destination for both tourists and investors. According to the HotelBenchmark Survey by Deloitte year-to-September 2004 figures show that both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh have seen significantly stronger growth in revenue per available room (revPAR) than South-East Asia as a whole when compared to the same period in 2000.

Guests Check-in To London Hotels As Occupancy Rises Above 80% | Deloitte reports

London hotels are experiencing the highest rates of occupancy since September 2000, according to research by Deloitte. The HotelBenchmark Survey shows occupancy levels reached 83 percent in September, up almost seven percent on the corresponding figures for the first nine months of last year.
