A 10/10 finish to the Young Hoteliers Summit Challenge provided by Dorchester Collection

The final day of the Young Hoteliers Summit commenced on Wednesday 18th March, by welcoming Fritz Dickamp (AEHL 2013 and YHS MC 2012) to the stage for a live stream with Mr. Steve Salom (General Manager Western Switzerland, UBER) on the topic of "Hospitality in the Sharing Economy". Via facebook, delegates were able to pose questions covering the growth and evolution of Uber and the brand's identity, the impact of the negative and positive publicity they have received, their recent partnerships and who they consider competition – hint: not taxis.

José Manuel Barroso and Ana Botín among speakers at the WTTC 15th annual Global Summit in Madrid

José Manuel Barroso will speak at the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) 15th annual Global Summit in Madrid, 15-16 April 2015. At a press conference at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum today, Spanish government authorities and WTTC announced that the theme for the Summit will be 'Disruption & Reinvention'. They also announced that the former President of the European Commission will speak at the prestigious global event alongside international business leaders including Ana Botín, Executive Chairman of Santander Bank. Up to 1000 people from around the world, including 300 chief executives, government ministers, thought leaders and media will come to Madrid for the Summit.

Accor’s online booking solution for tourism professionals already deployed in more than 150 destinations

The online leisure group booking solution for tourism professionals was launched in March 2014. One year on, it has already been deployed in 500 hotels in 150 destinations located mostly in Europe. More than 3,500 leisure group bookings have been made to date via this platform which is available on accorhotels.com under the "Professional Solutions" tab, in the "Tourism" section. This demonstrates that this online solution meets the demand from sector professionals (travel agents, tour operators, coach holiday operators) for a simpler and time-saving system.

ITB Report: Mobile usage is dominating the travel market – easy, quick and relevant information on one page

The mobile travel market is flourishing. This was illustrated impressively by Expedia Market Manager Arne Erichsen at the ITB Berlin Convention 2015. By 2020 there will be around 18 billion mobile devices in use. India and other Asian countries in particular are responsible for the high increase in numbers. They already rank second in the mobile device market and are 650 per cent larger than the third largest market. In Germany the market is growing too, said Erichsen. In 2016 mobile devices will be used to book one in every five overnights in Germany, twice as many as in 2013. "For Berlin's hotel industry, where over 5,000 rooms are booked daily, that means that 1,000 reservations are made with mobile devices." Good mobile device products and interfaces were now needed, he added."Customers on the move do not want to generate long pages of hotel reviews using smartphone keys or click on a series of links", said Erichsen. "Information must be easy and quick to obtain, relevant and fit onto one page." In particular, rather than just accepting online reviews one should use them to communicate with the customer. He called upon travel technology providers and developers to make an active effort to support this technological process.

Steigenberger staffs up to grow e-business, IT and digital services

The Steigenberger Hotel Group's main focus this year will be strongly directed towards achieving increased quality and productivity. Both Head Office and the hotels themselves are carrying out fine tuning processes to deliver improved solutions and innovations which will ultimately lead to even higher levels of comfort and guest satisfaction. The main thrusts here are the continuing development of digital booking channels and of customer loyalty programmes and the expansion of e-commerce and IT platforms to accelerate international growth whilst also bringing about a significant improvement in cost of sales via the deployment of digital media. Responsibility for the implementation of these ambitious objectives has been placed in the hands of the newly created Division of E-Business for E-Commerce & Distribution and Online Travel Agencies (OTA), which is headed up by Vice President Ralf Denke. Mr. Denke has been involved in the e-business industry for more than twelve years and will take on a central role in moving the company into the digital age. He will share this remit with Niklas Unger, the new Head of the IT Division. Adapted to the international strategy of the company in terms of applications, architecture and sourcing, IT creates the necessary basis for the successful implementation of innovations. Mr. Unger has already worked in a number of branches as an IT and process consultant and has held responsibility for Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), digital transformation and website relaunch projects. "We are delighted to have been able to secure the services of two such high-calibre candidates for these two new Head Office management roles," said Puneet Chhatwal, CEO of Steigenberger Hotels AG. "We took a conscious decision to recruit outside the hotel branch, and Mr. Denke and Mr. Unger will bring the necessary know-how to the table that will enable the Steigenberger Hotel Group to continue its successful development both in e-business and in the field of IT.
