Proposed DOL Overtime Changes Would Harm Hotels, Hurt Workers

American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) President & CEO Chip Rogers is speaking out today after the Department of Labor (DOL) issued a proposal to increase the minimum salary threshold for employees to qualify as salaried executive, administrative, and professional employees (and therefore exempt from overtime pay requirements) under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The proposal also would automatically update the threshold every three years. This would be the second increase imposed by DOL in less than 5 years. Employees who fail to qualify for the FLSA’s “white collar” exemption must be paid overtime for any hours worked over 40 in a given workweek, which can limit managerial and worker development opportunities, such as remote work, travel, and career development.

SURVEY: 86% of LA residents say city should not prioritize housing homeless individuals in hotels

98% of Los Angeles residents say homelessness in the city is a crisis or a major problem. Despite that, 86% say LA should not prioritize housing people experiencing homelessness in hotels, according to a new survey commissioned by the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) and conducted by Public Opinion Strategies.LA residents are set to vote in March 2024 on whether to require all local hotels to house unhoused individuals next to paying guests as part of a ballot initiative proposed by Unite Here, a labor union that represents LA-area hotel workers.

Galaxy Hotels Group Converts 220-Key Cedar Rapids Hotel in Iowa to Radisson Brand and Prepares for Renovation

Galaxy Hotels Group today announced the conversion of the full-service hotel at 1200 Collins Road NE in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to the Radisson Hotels Americas brand, which is a part of Choice Hotels International. The newly branded Radisson Hotel Cedar Rapids is the first hotel conversion to the Radisson brand since Radisson Hotels Americas was acquired by Choice Hotels International in 2022.
