Booking.com, one of the world's largest digital travel e-commerce companies, announced new scholarship initiatives with two leading universities in the U.S. last night during a reception at the brand's inaugural Women in Tech Code-a-thon with women empowerment activist and award-winning actress Laura Dern. Introduced to provide female students with necessary funding to advance their education in STEM, scholarships will be granted to undergraduate students at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia and postgraduate women students at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, studying subjects that include computer and information science, engineering, technology and mathematics. The grants will equal more than $350,000 across both universities, with scholarships starting in the 2019-20 academic year. WASHINGTON, D.C. - In honor of Sexual Assault Awareness Month this April, the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AHLA) is launching a month-long campaign along with member companies and national partners to raise public awareness about sexual assault and reaffirm the hotel industry's commitment to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all employees and guests. Today, AHLA's 2019 Board of Directors launched this campaign by uniting against sexual violence with an open letter in The Wall Street Journal, and by wearing jeans as part of a social media movement ahead of Peace Over Violence's Denim Day on April 24.
Results from a recent gender diversity study I conducted for the lodging industry indicate that of the 238 board seats available among the 28 U.S. lodging companies, only 51 were occupied by women (21%), a woefully low number. If we live in a world where women account for 80% of consumer spending and a multitude of credible studies point to a correlation between greater gender diversity and strong board performance, it is certainly time for us to address this issue head on. I have personally facilitated countless client board meetings and can say with unwavering confidence that gender diversity within the boardroom leads to first-rate ideation and collaboration. Here are some of my thoughts to stimulate change within the lodging industry.
