Cornell School of Hotel Administration to become part of new Cornell College of Business

Cornell University announced today that it will establish an integrated College of Business with the transformative excellence, scope and scale to cement the University’s position as a world-class center of teaching and research for business management and entrepreneurship. Upon launch, anticipated during the 2016-17 academic year, the College of Business will comprise Cornell’s three accredited business programs: the School of Hotel Administration, the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management, and the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management. Each school will maintain its unique identity and mission, while their collective capabilities will be strengthened by bringing together faculty, curricular offerings, and programs within a cohesive College.

Cornell University School of Hotel Administration Once Again Offering Free Online Course in Global Hospitality Management

On Jan. 25, 2016, the Cornell School of Hotel Administration (SHA) will once again offer a free online course, Introduction to Global Hospitality Management. Much like its successful inaugural run in the winter of 2015, which boasted more than 14,000 course registrations during its open enrollment period, this Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), hosted by edX is open for registration to all who are seeking to expand their knowledge of—or advance their career within—the global hospitality industry and offers participants the ability to grow their experience in hospitality management through the convenience of online learning.

Cornell Study Finds Little Damage to Restaurant Industry from Minimum Wage Boosts...So Far

Federal and state minimum wage increases over the past twenty years have not resulted in fewer restaurants or lower employment in the United States, according to an analysis published by the Center for Hospitality Research (CHR) at Cornell's School of Hotel Administration (SHA) in association with the Cornell Institute for Hospitality Labor and Employment Relations (CIHLER). The study, "Have Minimum Wage Increases Hurt the Restaurant Industry? The Evidence Says No!," was written by Michael Lynn and Christopher Boone, both SHA faculty members. The report is available at no charge from CHR.

H-2B Workforce Coalition Applauds Favorable H-2B Provisions In End-of-Year Congressional Spending Legislation

The H-2B Workforce Coalition, an alliance of more than 40 various industry associations focused on protecting American workers by ensuring American small and seasonal employers have access to legal short-term temporary employees during peak business periods, issued the following statement supporting the favorable language to the H- 2B visa waiver program in the Fiscal Year 2016 Omnibus Appropriations bill. The H-2B provisions will provide small businesses with the certainty they need to hire seasonal workers in high demand and operate their businesses efficiently and effectively while balancing the safety and security of our homeland. The Senate and House are expected to pass the end-of-year spending legislation this week, and the President is expected sign the bill into law.

Cornell Analysis Finds Confusion in Recent Supreme Court Employment Decisions

Two recent holdings by the U.S. Supreme Court have been hailed as "victories" for employees seeking personal accommodations under civil rights law. However, a new analysis from the Cornell Institute for Hospitality Labor and Employment Relations (CIHLER) finds little real change—along with considerable confusion—regarding the Court's actual holding. The analysis, "The United States Supreme Court Rules in Favor of Employees in the Young and Abercrombie Cases: What Do They Really Hold?," is written by David Sherwyn and David B. Ritter. Sherwyn is the John and Melissa Ceriale Professor of Hospitality Human Resources, professor of law at Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration, and CIHLER director. Ritter is a partner in the Chicago office of Barnes & Thornburg. Published in association with the Center for Hospitality Research, Sherwyn and Ritter's analysis is available at no charge.

H-2B Workforce Coalition Applauds Introduction Of House Bill To Reform H-2B Visa Program

The H-2B Workforce Coalition, an alliance of more than 40 various industry associations focused on protecting American workers by ensuring American small and seasonal employers have access to legal short-term temporary employees during peak business periods, issued the following statement supporting H.R. 3918, the Strengthen Employment and Seasonal Opportunities Now Act, which was introduced bySmall Business Committee Chairman Steve Chabot (R-Ohio), House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.), Congressman Andy Harris (R- Md.), and Congressman Charles W. Boustany, Jr., MD (R-La.). The legislation would reform the H-2B temporary non-agricultural visa program and provide business owners with the certainty they need to hire seasonal workers in high demand. The House bill was introduced on the heels of similar legislation introduced in the Senate earlier this week by Senators Tillis, Mikulski, Cassidy and Warner.

According to a recent study by Harvard Business Review, females are one of the most powerful economic forces in the world. In the United States, women make up more than 50% of the population and account for over 80% of consumer spend. If this is the case, why do so few females occupy seats in the corporate boardroom?In our 2015 AETHOS Consulting Group Corporate Governance Study of the chain restaurant industry, we identified an astoundingly low number of women executives serving as corporate board members. Of the top 45 public U.S. chain restaurant companies, a woeful 18% of board seats were occupied by women.
