Minor Hotels and NH Hotel Group are pleased to announce the signing of an agreement to operate the Villa Padierna Palace, a hotel located in Marbella in the south of Spain. The property is owned by the Villa Padierna group and will be managed with immediate effect under a variable lease agreement. Following Minor Hotels' acquisition of NH Hotel Group in October 2018, this agreement will see the first integration of the two companies' portfolio of brands, with Villa Padierna to be rebranded to Minor Hotels' core luxury brand Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas in the coming months.
Scandic has made an agreement with property owner Eiendomsspar to renovate and expand Scandic Helsfyr in Oslo in conjunction with extending the lease agreement. Close to 200 new rooms will be added to the hotel, bringing the number of rooms from 253 to 450 and making Scandic Helsfyr the largest Scandic hotel in Norway. In addition to the new rooms, the conference facilities will be renovated and a new 300 m2 meeting space will be added. The expansion is expected to be completed during 2021, and is in line with Scandic's expectation of continued good demand development in the hotel market in the Oslo region.

Never change a winning team: Union Investment, the owner of the property, and Steigenberger Hotels AG have extended the lease for the hotel on Hamburg's Fleetinsel for another 25 years. The two parties have also agreed to carry out a comprehensive refurbishment of the hotel, which was built in 1992. Beginning with the underground garage and followed by the 8th floor, the hotel will be gradually updated, remaining open during refurbishment. The works are scheduled to start in spring 2019. Union Investment is investing around EUR 50 million in the upgrading programme.

The International Hotel Investment Forum (IHIF) is delighted to announce that Sol Kerzner (KCMG), will be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award during IHIF 2019. The founder and former Chairman of Kerzner International Holdings Limited has carved a prestigious and pioneering career within the hospitality industry and is widely credited as a visionary who redefined the scope and scale of destination resorts. The youngest of four children, born in Johannesburg to Russian immigrants, Kerzner's early career began in accounting before taking the helm of the family owned and operated hotel chain. He bought his first hotel, the Astra Hotel in Durban, in 1962 and quickly went on to build South Africa's first 5-star hotel, the Beverly Hills hotel. Several more hotel development projects followed, expanding beyond South Africa, until 1979 which saw Kerzner's development of Sun City, the most ambitious resort project in Africa. The ten-year project encompassed four hotels, a man-made lake, two golf courses and an entertainment centre with an indoor 6,000-seat arena in which hosted many stars including Frank Sinatra, Liza Minnelli and Shirley Bassey. Many astute acquisitions, developments and expansions followed across the globe including the creation of the internationally recognised resort brand Atlantis, as well as the renowned luxury brand One&Only Resorts.
