New AHLEI Partner in Cyprus Promotes Hospitality Certifications

The American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI) has signed a partnership agreement with Polykarpou hrd, based in Cyprus. The company, which specialized in training, human resources management, and industrial relations, has established the Cyprus Hospitality Educational Institute (CHEI) as a dedicated brand focusing on hospitality industry training and certification using AHLEI's internationally-recognized programs. Polykarpou hrd and the Cyprus Hospitality Educational Institute were founded by Polys Polykarpou, a certified labor consultant with a career in industrial relations. He specializes in human resources management, organizational development, and training. With a background in the hospitality industry, Polykarpou earned AHLEI's Human Resources Management Certificate of Specialization and began to use AHLEI principles as part of his training style. Then he decided to take an even bigger step. "Aiming even higher, we claimed a partnership with AHLEI, the most recognized institution in the field of certification of hospitality professionals," he stated. "For this purpose, we have established the CHEI (Cyprus Hospitality Educational Institute)." The CHEI is coordinated by Diana Assadourian Estephan, CHT, an AHLEI certified trainer and proctor. She and Polykarpou lead a team of more than 16 professionals who provide all kinds of professional training with an emphasis on hospitality certification. "I am thrilled to see Mr. Polykarpou join forces with one of our most passionate certification ambassadors overseas, Ms. Assadourian, to form a unique organization that will have the dual aims of educating students and enhancing the skills and competencies of existing hospitality professionals," said Ed Kastli, AHLEI's vice president, international sales. "The Educational Institute is certainly proud of this new partnership and looks forward to see it benefit Cypriotes in the hospitality industry in years to come."Polykarpou explained that tourism is a major source of income in Cyprus, despite the country's political and economic challenges. He noted that starting in the late 1970s and after a booming in early 1980s, a lot of people joined the industry having no idea about it. "Today, a big number of professionals are educated but an even bigger number are working only with basic knowledge. New generation managers are investing in staff training and developing with more confidence than before, but training organizations are not investing in training programs for professionals, or developing their techniques and methods," he explained. "A clearly professional training organization specializing in hospitality, recognizing the experience and providing certification on the topics, is what our industry needs. Through our partnership with AHLEI, we believe we have the best of global certification providers to work with. It is in our hands to take this opportunity, and transform it to an opportunity of success."

Swiss website 24heures.ch talks about an upcoming sale of Laureate's hotelschools in Switzerland. Besides the Glion Institute of Higher Education (two sites in Switzerland and one in Bubble London 2200 students), Laureate, world leader in high private schools (one million students on 80 campuses in 28 countries), owns the Hotel School Les Roches, Bluche (VS). A prize of € 200 million should be raised for the package (220 million), according Ecucation Investor. Credit Suisse would be in charge of the first round of offers which recently started.

Pacifica Hotels Chooses AHLEI for Online Training

Pacifica Hotels, the largest owner and operator of independent hotels along the California Coast, has signed an agreement with the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI) to provide its employees access to a variety of online learning resources through CourseLine®, AHLEI's eLearning platform. Through CourseLine®, Pacifica Hotels team members are able to access a variety of training programs, including Guest Service Gold®, Supervisory Skill Builders, START for Individual Positions, Eye on Awareness®, and 20 CyberCinema® videos in English and Spanish. Many of the training programs lead to professional certification. Lithuanian Resort and Restaurant Are First Certified Guest Service Properties in Europe

The American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI) has awarded the first Certified Guest Service Property awards to two properties in Vilnius, Lithuania—IDW Esperanza Resort and Verkiai Restaurant. Ed Kastli, AHLEI's vice president, international sales, presented the awards March 11 at IDW Esperanza Resort. To earn the Certified Guest Service Property designation, employees completed AHLEI's Guest Service Gold® training and earned the Certified Guest Service Professional (CGSP®) designation. IDW Esperanza Resort has 14 employees certified with CGSP® while Verkiai Restaurant has 10 CGSP® employees. Linas Pucinskas, CHE, CGSP, managing director of Verkiai, was among the first people in Lithuania to take the Guest Service Gold® training and CSGP® certification exam when it was introduced in Vilnius in April 2013. He delivered the program to the staff at Verkiai, a luxury restaurant located on the ground floor of the Verkiai Palace in Vilnius. Pucinskas introduced the program to Tomas Maknickas, general manager of the IDW Esperanza Resort, a five-star eco-friendly boutique property that is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World. "We decided that such a training and certification would be useful to both our employees and the resort," said Maknickas. "The employees enjoyed the online training and I'm sure it will contribute toward some truly remarkable Guest Service Gold® moments at our resort." He added, "It is an honor for us to earn the title of Certified Guest Service Property. This is yet another reflection of our organization's continued focus on excellence in meeting the needs of our guests." Pucinskas, who has conducted Guest Service Gold® training at several hotels in Lithuania, said that the program is effective, easy to implement, affordable, and well accepted by both employees and guests. "Within the hospitality industry in Europe, we are often discussing Western hospitality standards, which means the highest professionalism and best service provided to the guests. However, nobody was able to describe clearly exactly what that meant. AHLEI has offered a perfect product with seven elements and short-term training, followed by an exam and certification. Today, we can better understand and explain easily what these Western standards of hospitality and guest service professionalism are," he explained.
