Direct Booking Summit Europe 2018: Day 1 & 2 Recap

Since the crack of dawn hundreds of hoteliers have been arriving in Amsterdam to join us for one of the biggest hospitality events of this summer - the Direct Booking Summit. Today, the participants were treated to insightful panel discussions and presentations on the hottest topics in the hospitality industry centring on Distribution, Marketing and Technology. The participants were welcomed by Charlie Osmond, Chief Tease of Triptease, who pointed out that personalization is the ultimate trend among hotels today. He asked gathered hoteliers whether they will be proactive or reactive in taking ownership of their own distribution, setting the mood for today's discussions. Later, he came back on the stage to speak about digital hotel experience, emphasising once again to delegates that hoteliers need to be thinking about the guest experience from the very first search all the way through to post-stay.

Naftalan: The Azerbaijan resort where guests bathe in crude oil | cnn.com

Ever since the world's first oil well was dug here back in 1847, Azerbaijan has been making the most of its plentiful stocks of "black gold."More than 170 years later, Azeri Light crude oil is still the country's most valuable resource. But in the little town of Naftalan, 320 kilometers west of Baku in the foothills of the Lesser Caucasus Mountains, an unusual local oil -- also called Naftalan -- has been attracting the travel set for hundreds of years. This crude oil is too thick for commercial use and it isn't much good for burning. But it's said to have health-giving properties and so people have been bathing in it since ancient times.Recently, treatments involving being submerged in the dark gloop have had a resurgence.

Hotel booking websites told to stop 'one room left' warnings - telegraph.co.uk

Hotel booking websites have been told to stop "one room left" warnings designed to pressure holidaymakers into booking, under a crackdown by competition watchdogs. Such warnings are currently used by the UK's most popular booking sites including Expedia and Booking.com to encourage customers to book sooner rather than later. Following an investigation into holiday booking sites the Competition and Markets Authority said it would take firms to court if they did not end unfair and misleading practices.

Italy's mermaid battle: Naples vs. Ventotene | cnn.com

In ancient times, sailors once lashed themselves to their masts to avoid being lured to death by seductive mermaids known as sirens.Today, on the sun-kissed western shores of Italy, mermaids are once again stirring up trouble as two rival destinations battle it out to lure tourists with claims of being home to the mythological fishy creatures. In one corner is Naples, with a glittering gulf that stretches to the Sorrento Peninsula. In the other is Ventotene, a tiny volcanic isle far out in the Tyrrhenian Sea west of Naples. Both of these Mediterranean magnets claim to be the "real" place where Greek hero and travel figure Odysseus, sailing home from burning Troy, encountered the seductive sirens.Legend has it that Odysseus escaped the fate of other doomed sailors by tying himself to the mast of his ship and telling his companions to plug their ears.Spurned, the creatures perished, but their pull is still felt every summer as curious tourists flock to learn more. But where should they go?

Protect your hotel brand from brandjacking

The neologism brandjacking was coined over a decade ago, by astutely combining the words branding and hijacking. In our industry, when we talk about brandjacking, we usually refer to all those activities whose lowest common denominator is the exploitation of another company brand's equity, such as the creation of fake social network profiles or mirror-websites. The most frequent use of brandjacking is, however, is the one that goes under the name of Affiliate Brand Bidding. This mischievous tactic consists in investing in search engines advertising campaigns and bidding on terms that are related targeted company. Ever googled your hotel's name and found Booking.com, Expedia, trivago and TripAdvisor before your official website? Well, that's ABB.

No. The question bundles several things under "Google search marketing." Ads, Hotel Ads, Business Profile and YouTube sit alongside organic, and zero-click only erodes one slice of that, informational organic clicks.Booking intent is transactional and local, the query types least touched by AI Overviews: under 10% of commercial searches trigger one.
