But what are these things called lobbies and how have they changed over the years?

Italian starchitect and designer of such famous buildings as Paris' Pompidou Centre and the Shard in London has unveiled new plans for a 36-storey hotel and apartment tower in San Francisco. Located in the Transbay area in downtown San Francisco, 555 Howard Street will create a large mixed-use development close to the city's famous Embarcadero which will be home to 255 guest suites and 69 dwellings. The glass skyscraper will front onto what will be the city's fourth tallest building, another hotel and residential tower designed by American-Argentine architect Cesar Pelli.
California-based architecture firms AXIS Architecture + Design and Gene Fong Associates today announced the merger of their two design studios. Effective as of April 1, 2017, the merged company will operate under the new banner AXIS/GFA Architecture + Design.
The Hilton Wilmington/Christiana in northern Delaware is amidst a $7 million reimagination and repositioning project that is transforming the 270-room hotel, located at 100 Continental Drive, into a contemporary destination featuring elegant accommodations and a sophisticated design. Owned and operated by Meyer Jabara Hotels (MJH), and designed by Virserius Studio, the first phase of the project is now complete, with all guestrooms, corridors and "Club on 4" executive lounge receiving new embellishments from floor to ceiling.

The American Institute of Architects Miami Chapter, Greater Miami & The Beaches Hotel Association (GMBHA) and Oberhausen Marketing & Public Relations announced the winners of the first annual Miami Hospitality Design Awards on Monday, March 6, during a celebration at the world-renowned Faena Forum in Miami Beach. With over 150 architecture, design, hotel and restaurant professionals in attendance, the inaugural awards honored hoteliers, restaurants, licensed architects and designers whose work showcased design excellence in Miami's hospitality and design industries. "Through our support and that of AIA Miami, Oberhausen Marketing & PR and Hospitality Design magazine, the awards recognized the wonderful diversity and design excellence that continues to put Miami's hospitality industry on the world map," said Wendy Kallergis, president and CEO, GMBHA. Nearly 100 submissions were received across 18 categories, and winners were selected by a distinguished group of industry leaders. Of all the entries, the judges felt that two qualified for special commendation above and beyond the prescribed design categories. Both projects have played a significant role in re-imagining and reviving their respective neighborhoods. The Estates at Acqualina, the new highly anticipated $1.5 billion residential development, today reveals a rendering of Karl Lagerfeld’s lobby design for its ultra-luxury residential development in Miami’s Sunny Isles Beach, on the grounds of the Forbes Five Star and AAA Five Diamond Acqualina Resort & Spa on the Beach. The rendering is for the lobby of the South Tower, also known as 777 Via Acqualina, scheduled to be completed in 2020. A second North Tower, with a different lobby also designed by Karl Lagerfeld, is planned to be completed as well. The Estates at Acqualina is the first condominium project in the United States to involve the iconic designer.
